The global spectacle of the 2024 Olympics in Paris will break new ground in several ways. Sure it features the debut of breakdancing as an Olympic event, but it will also be the first Games to showcase an identical number of female and male athletes. The Paris Olympic games will also have advancements off the field, with unprecedented coverage, including round-the-clock streaming, the trial of an AI-powered end-to-end 8K live-streaming system, and daytime broadcasts of swimming, gymnastics, and track and field finals.

Speaking of firsts, Peacock, NBCUniversal’s American OTT streaming service, will live-stream all 329 medal events, a noteworthy evolution in sports broadcasting. This pivotal move to streaming platforms highlights a major shift in how audiences engage with sports content. With over 5,000 hours of live coverage, complete event replays, and new multiview features, viewers can watch what they want on their chosen device.

Fan engagement is the key to winning in today’s competitive world of global sports. With an explosion of content to manage, distributed and often freelance teams to coordinate, multiple locations, and myriad distribution platforms to feed, technology will be key to helping journalists overcome the many hurdles required to produce winning coverage.

Producing Olympic Gold: A Data-focused Model

Media outlets have an opportunity to reshape their coverage and diversify the agenda, diving into stories and covering athletes often overlooked during regular sports seasons. A more explanatory, data-driven approach will help audiences understand non-mainstream disciplines. Expanded coverage will inform about what happens on the ground beyond results, with post-event interviews with athletes.

To engage Olympic audiences, media organizations must navigate an overwhelming flood of information with seamless management and collaboration strategies. The challenge is producing a constant stream of diverse, fact-checked, and compelling content for various platforms while managing the exponential increase in both input and output.

French broadcasters will cover the games and the impact on Parisian life around the clock, not just from a sports perspective, but from a news perspective, from pre-game setup to closing ceremonies. France Télévisions has exclusive free-to-air rights to show the Games, with dedicated streams covering every sport across all screens. Other channels that do not have broadcast rights, such as regional channels and 24-hour television news channels, will focus on highlights and urban impacts as well as background stories and athlete profiles. Seamless collaboration will be required when sharing packages for affiliates to localize and rebrand.

Historically, broadcasters operated around a singular data model focused on linear television with fixed schedules driving the process. However, the dynamic nature of today’s sports and news cycles—exemplified by events like the 2024 Olympics—demands a more versatile approach. Content is now distributed across multiple platforms, including apps, radio, websites, social media, and podcasts. The once-clear division of labor between editors, videographers and producers has blurred, replaced by the need for real-time updates and instant accessibility. Adapting to this fast-paced environment necessitates a fundamental shift in organizational dynamics and information flow.

Broadcasters now need to efficiently produce platform-optimized versions of content. Tasks such as ingesting, scripting, editing, localization, digital versioning, and graphics creation all revolve around the event. So most media outlets will leverage news workflow concepts for sports broadcasting. This streamlined process not only reduces costs but also enhances collaboration, visibility, and access to media assets. Consequently, producing platform-tailored versions of sporting events becomes significantly more efficient and cost-effective.

This workflow is underpinned by an AI-driven data model that aggregates content types, enriches them with metadata, and provides the structure necessary for workflow automation. Task assignments and notifications ensure smooth operations. As linear and digital media continue to converge, this robust data model bridges the gap between editorial decision-making and automated technical processes, crucially impacting media production.

Olympic Feats in the Cloud: Transforming Sports with Technology

Increasing reliance on cloud infrastructure for content sourcing, processing, and distribution has prompted a reassessment of system designs and the associated infrastructure costs and scalability requirements. The cloud provides geographical flexibility and complements physical on-premise infrastructure. More fundamentally, a media workflow in the cloud is a software-defined infrastructure, enabling unprecedented agility and operational efficiency.

This means news and sports coverage is no longer constrained by physical infrastructure, nor limited to a single geographical location. Virtual media operations can respond almost immediately to any demand or change of circumstances, as adaptable as the news itself. In the past, broadcast systems were sized based on the “worst-case scenario,” with a large number of expensive ingest ports, media processing nodes, and storage.

The challenge of ingesting and processing Olympic-level resources provides the perfect use-case for the elasticity of the cloud. Cloud-based video recorders spin off in seconds, adjusting to requirements such as streaming protocol, encoding format, and bandwidth. Capturing feeds only for an event’s duration, they provide an ideal replacement for on-premises equipment farms, especially when ingest needs vary greatly within the day. Workload elasticity applies to media processing as well. Automatically expanded resources let content creators work concurrently on growing files from many sources with enough remote rendering power to deliver content on the fly from anywhere during live story development.

Cloud-native platforms can optimize costs, by automatically adjusting and scaling infrastructure, almost in real-time, based on workload demands. Cloud-native applications can be designed so that you only pay for infrastructure as needed, thus optimizing operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness. However, many broadcasters are adopting hybrid cloud approaches, combining on-premises infrastructure with cloud services. This strategy balances the benefits of both, aiding in major events like the Olympics while gradually reducing technical debt.

AI-Powered Broadcasting: The Future of Sports Coverage

The worlds of sports and data are deeply intertwined, with AI playing a pivotal role. Since the 2018 PyeongChang Games, AI has supported judges and referees in making accurate calls. Intel’s AI-powered 3D Athlete Tracking (3DAT) revolutionized the fan experience at the Tokyo Games by providing near real-time insights and overlay visualizations. Looking ahead to Paris 2024, AI will enhance scoring accuracy and offer judges real-time performance analysis, redefining how we understand athletic achievements.

For broadcasters, AI is often more pragmatic. With hyper-localization a key consideration, AI is essential to facilitate or eliminate basic or repetitive time-demanding tasks, and to assist in gathering information and preparing content. Integrated AI at scale can handle the complexity of multiple languages, automating translations of captions, graphics, voiceovers, and more. AI can support every stage of the production chain, analyzing and indexing incoming content so it is discoverable and recommending relevant content without requiring journalists to waste time logging.

For example, if there is a gymnastics accident, instead of a journalist searching for a similar incident from the last Olympics, AI-powered recommendations can propose material, then re-package content so that it’s ready for distribution across any platform. AI can help to quickly repackage highlights with different branding for each affiliate or distribution platform, using consistent branding templates. Localizing and customizing content for different audiences and platforms.

In just four years, technology has advanced greatly from traditional workflows that often required separate teams to use different tools and repositories on the same content for each platform. Hours would be spent on technical tasks to manually exchange content, adapt and process different versions. AI-powered automation can accelerate the workflows to “do more with less.” Produce once, then use AI to automatically create multiple versions. For example, crop a 16:9 interview of an athlete to 1:1, add digital graphics and text on screen, and prep to send to Facebook.

Technological innovation and human collaboration are at the heart of the Olympics. The 2024 Olympics will not just be a display of athletic prowess but also a testament to the advancements in media technology. Media professionals who embrace story-centric workflows and AI-driven cloud infrastructure will cross yet another finish line in the race for innovation. Successfully navigating the complexities of modern Olympic coverage will ensure that audiences worldwide experience every moment of the Games like never before.

How Production-connected MAM Enables Collaborative Media Workflows https://www.dalet.com/blog/production-connected-mam-collaborative-media-workflows/ https://www.dalet.com/blog/production-connected-mam-collaborative-media-workflows/#respond Tue, 07 May 2024 08:41:00 +0000 https://www.dalet.com/?p=34570 Discover how our production-connected MAM enhances media workflow collaboration, streamlining processes from ingest to archive for efficiency.

The post How Production-connected MAM Enables Collaborative Media Workflows appeared first on Dalet.

]]>
In a recent post, we outlined how market trends and technological advances have caused the requirements of production asset management (PAM) and media asset management (MAM) systems to converge.

Production budgets are being squeezed, ways of working are becoming more complex, and global, remote teams face more challenges than ever when it comes to collaborating effectively. This is driving a need for better collaboration tools across media workflows, and thus an increased demand for agile MAM systems with production capabilities.

At Dalet, we’ve responded to this change with the development of Dalet Flex, the world’s first production-connected MAM.

So, what exactly is a production-connected MAM and how does it help foster collaboration for creative teams in real terms?

A MAM That Serves User Needs

At the heart of Dalet Flex is FlexMAM, the main interface that serves as the gateway to your organization’s media assets. FlexMAM makes it easy to upload, organize and review assets, search for and update metadata, begin editing, export edit decision lists (EDLs), and trigger workflows.
Unlike traditional asset management systems that categorize files by folders, FlexMAM adopts a flexible data model with customizable taxonomies. Robust filtering and search capabilities are built in, ensuring that asset search and retrieval is as intuitive as it is frictionless. This approach encourages team members to explore and use assets more efficiently.

Improved Collaboration from Import to Archive

The platform offers a suite of web-based applications designed to streamline every stage of a typical media workflow. In addition to FlexMAM our core applications encourage collaboration in the following ways:

  • FlexMOVE simplifies the import process, allowing users to upload content from various sources directly into Dalet Flex, supporting every file type.
  • Dalet Cut provides editing capabilities, enabling users to work on videos directly within the web interface, enhancing collaboration between editors and producers.
  • FlexREVIEW facilitates the review and approval process, allowing teams to provide feedback and make decisions swiftly.
  • FlexTRACK offers a real-time overview of workflows, ensuring everyone involved is up-to-date with the progress of projects.
  • FlexXTEND allows access to media libraries directly from NLEs such as Adobe Premiere Pro, enabling remote production workflows.
  • FlexMOBILE allows users to work from anywhere with an easy-to-use application available on Android and iOS devices.
  • FlexADMIN allows users and administrators to manage users, groups and workspaces in an account.

These applications are fully web-based. This ensures accessibility from anywhere, improving collaboration across different locations and time zones.

In addition, the wider Dalet ecosystem consists of a selection of tools that streamline the wider technical video production process. High-density ingest and playout, media conversion, real-time multilayer graphics and augmentation through AI are all taken care of by our suite of complementary products.

How This Enables Collaboration Across Media Workflows in Practice

In the past, MAM systems were seen as tools to support content managers and archivists.
With a production-connected MAM, the lives of individual users across the media workflow are made easier. What’s more, team members reap the benefits of features that encourage collaboration.
This is especially important as modern studios and production teams utilize hybrid working and remote collaboration. It’s unrealistic to expect all relevant stakeholders to sit within the same building at the same time. Effective delegation, providing feedback, changing creative direction, editing on the fly and meeting tight deadlines – these are all tasks that have become more challenging in recent years as a result.

Luckily, production-connected MAMs boast cloud-native features that help to simplify and automate processes, bringing colleagues and collaborators closer together… even when they’re split across cities, countries and continents.

So, how does this is bear fruit in practice:

1- Easy access for multiple users

Video production and media management is a group effort and production projects can be fluid. Freelancers often need to be brought onto projects and given access to the right media, often without much lead time.

Within a production-connected MAM like Dalet Flex, project owners can easily grant access to multiple users and set permissions accordingly.

Users, groups and workspaces can be created quickly, at the touch of a button, and it’s easy to add or remove members to and from groups and workspaces at speed.

When personnel changes or user permissions need to be adjusted, having a MAM that is able to react in real time is crucial.

Who benefits: Producer, Director, Project Lead

2- Collaborative editing on the fly

Dalet Cut further enhances collaborative efforts by enabling teams to work together on editing processes.

As a lightning-fast multimedia editing tool with native access to the full media library, users of all video editing skill levels can quickly edit and publish content from anywhere. Anyone with a web browser can begin editing and assembling a project, which can then be seamlessly handed over to another editor.
Versions of edited files with different aspect ratios for all playout scenarios can be quickly created and distributed to multiple platforms directly from the edit suite.

For more involved edits, there’s frictionless connection between Dalet Cut and advanced NLEs such as Premiere Pro. This enables a smooth transition when projects need to cross from MAM to the editing suite. Dalet Xtend allows Premier Pro users to access the same collection of media and edit lists, making it extra easy to pick things up where they were left.

Who Benefits: Editor, Producer, VFX, Colorist, Finisher

3- Faster asset retrieval via advanced search

Locating assets by metadata allows users to find exactly what they need without the typical hassle associated with large libraries.

Moreover, Dalet Flex’s taxonomy-based structure, along with technical filters, affords the ability to refine searches by characteristics such as asset type, frame rate, language, and more. Need to find all clips shot in 4:3, in German, with owned rights, that feature… elephants? No problem.

There is also the functionality to save and share searches. If a user has a detailed search request that they frequently use, they no longer need to repetitively type it in and apply relevant filters. Instead, the process can be saved and repeated at the click of a button. This action can also be shared with other users.

Faster, more efficient retrieval helps create time for more creativity and collaboration at other stages of the workflow.

Who benefits: Archivist, Ingest Manager, QC, Legal, Producer, Editor, Sales

4- Better curated media through collections

Central to Dalet Flex is the creation and management of collections. These serve as repositories for organized production assets. Collections can include assets, clips, and sub-collections, with customizable access and metadata settings.

They help production teams to better curate the media they work with.

For instance, collections help to simplify the process of bringing together a selection of assets to be later used in editorial.

The collection can be shared with other users, either to send them the finalized content selection or help contribute to the curation process further.

Who benefits: Producer, Editor

5- Simplified workflow orchestration and automation

Dalet Flex’s Workflow Designer turns the process of building workflows into a frictionless, drag-and-drop experience. Users can visually map out a project’s flow using a variety of “ingredients” like actions, resources, and scripts. They can then select and arrange these elements to design a perfect workflow. This can either be launched into action immediately or saved as a draft for later refinement.

Workflows can run manually, or even more efficiently through automation. Project leads can select specific sets of business rules and metadata properties, enabling complex workflows to run automatically.

This type of orchestration helps to bring about greater collaboration. It enables the correct people to receive content or notifications at the right steps of the workflow, keeping everyone involved informed and in sync.

Who benefits: Everyone working across the project

6- Streamlined review and approval processes

Dalet Flex Review streamlines the feedback and approval processes.

Team members can comment directly on assets, providing clear and actionable time-coded feedback that can be exported straight into editing software. This can be done anywhere, at any time, as long as the user is connected to the internet, and comments can be searched for across the media library.

Advanced workflows can be set up to trigger certain actions based on review sessions. For example, if a copyright concern crops up, an email can be automatically triggered for Legal to review.

This helps bring the right team members into the production process efficiently – only looping them in when needed.

Who Benefits: Producer, Editor, Director, Legal, QC, VFX, Colorist, Finisher

7- Improved archiving through metadata management

Dalet Flex integrates AI technologies to enhance natural language and visual content processing. This allows for efficient and detailed metadata generation. Users can therefore search for assets based on what is contained within shot, as well as what features within various audio tracks.

This turns content discovery from a laborious chore into a task that is second nature. Teams are able to work more harmoniously when the content they require is within easy reach.

Who benefits: Archivist, Ingest Manager, QC, Producer, Editor, Sales

8- Advanced integration with other systems and platforms

Even with a MAM as comprehensive as Dalet Flex, third party apps, programs, and systems will still likely be used across the production process. Dalet Flex’s capability to integrate with external systems through APIs means that it can seamlessly fit into existing workflows, connecting with traffic systems, task management software, and more.

This integration capability, coupled with automation features, streamlines operations, reducing manual work and allowing teams to focus on creative tasks.

Who Benefits: Producer, Editor, Project Lead

Get Ready to Boost Your Own Media Workflow Collaboration

AI, AI, AI. Rarely have we seen a technology grow its footprint so quickly in conversations with our customers and the market. Yet, a significant chasm remains between the hype of lofty promises and the sobering reality of successful adoption—beyond ‘shadow AI’ and user experiments that are not necessarily supported by organizations! Why is that?

From practical, integrated AI to… GenAI

AI technologies progressed drastically in the last few years. Speech-to-text and face recognition are prime examples of use cases where AI-driven solutions that have existed for many years have now reached an acceptable level of maturity and commercial viability. Other use cases that rely on generative AI already offer potential business value and the ability to improve end-users’ experiences: semantic search, content summarization, copywriting, headline suggestion, assistance in adapting the length of a text, generating highlights from a video… the list is long and growing!

This is just the beginning

We are on the cusp of major advancements that will dramatically increase the value generative AI can bring to our industry:

  • The development of truly multi-modal AI models capable of efficiently working with multiple types of data (text, images, audio, and video). For example, GPT-5, the next generation of OpenAI’s model powering ChatGPT, is slated for release this year and is expected to bring significant improvements in this area. For example, Sora, their AI video generator, is a significant step in that direction. Sora can create realistic and imaginative video scenes from text instructions.
  • The rise of “AI agents” capable of forming plans to solve a problem and executing on their own without needing step-by-step instructions from a human. The recent introduction of Devin, “the world’s first AI software engineer” by Cognition Labs, has shaken the industry and is a great illustration of what’s to come.

This year, game-changing developments will likely surpass our expectations, drastically disrupting businesses in 2025 and beyond. We have all witnessed massive industry transformations in the past – think of digital transformation, the transition to SaaS, or cloud computing. The difference with AI is the speed at which it is impacting us as well as the pace at which we all have to adapt.

Getting ready is vital.

How do we prepare? What is currently slowing down successful adoption?

The M&E industry and society as a whole already face pressing ethical issues around AI, notably in tackling bias. As deep fakes grow more sophisticated, our imperative intensifies to combat disinformation, particularly within journalistic spheres. Moreover, recent upheavals in Hollywood underscore the urgency of establishing robust guidelines for integrating AI into the creative realm, while upholding equitable recognition and compensation for human creators. Aware of the potential risks, many governments are now pursuing AI regulation, with new norms and standards that companies should follow to ensure ethical and responsible use across various industries and sectors.

In addition to these ethical issues, Dalet has pinpointed the following critical challenges that we are addressing to unlock AI’s true potential and foster its adoption in the news, sports, and entertainment industries:

  • Integration in business workflows: Today Incorporating AI into business workflows often entails employing point solutions such as “translate this,” “summarize that,” or “identify people in this video.” These solutions often require users to deviate from their primary tools, disrupting their workflow by relocating content from central repositories. How do we seamlessly integrate those tools into end-to-end workflows to truly unlock efficiencies?
  • Depth and specialization in AI: In a recent DPP podcast featuring Sanjeevan Bala, ITV’s Chief Data & AI Officer, his statement struck a chord: “Fundamentally a lot of these large language models are an inch deep and a mile wide. They’re alright at lots of things, but they’re not great when you go into something very deeply.” How do we go beyond this? How can we imbue AI models with a deeper understanding of the nuances and subtleties of our industry?
  • Intellectual Property: Tailoring AI models to your business requires training them on your content. How can we facilitate this process in a manner that respects intellectual property rights, providing the necessary control and transparency, all while safeguarding your most critical assets?
  • Controlling AI “hallucinations”: What strategies can we implement to better manage and mitigate AI-generated inaccuracies?
  • The Pilot/Co-pilot relationship: AI makes for an incredible “co-pilot,” assisting with numerous tasks. Yet, end-users remain the captains. How do we ensure they maintain the appropriate level of awareness and visibility to identify and control what has been done by AI?

We stand at a pivotal juncture in AI’s ascent. Dalet firmly believes that addressing these questions is crucial to continue enhancing our products with AI and to bring significant value to our customers and the market. We have been offering practical integrated AI through Dalet Media Cortex since 2018. The Dalet Media Cortex AI service platform is a mature, proven assistant that harnesses best-of-breed AI engines to bring AI-infused tools and workflows for key use cases: speech recognition, language translation, automated metadata tagging, and more. The goal? Making media professionals more productive and freeing up time for creative work.

So how do we continue to move forward? At Dalet, our approach to tackling such challenges has not changed; we always place collaboration with our customers and leading organizations in the industry at the heart of the process.

Dalet Flex provides unprecedented access to your archives… Here is how to harness your newfound assets.

You’ve made a significant investment in capturing and creating engaging content. Now you need a well-thought-out strategy to maximize its potential. Enter monetization, the game-changer.

Monetization can be divided into two main categories: direct and indirect.

Let’s delve deeper.

Indirect Monetization – The Building Blocks

Indirect monetization means leveraging your existing content to enhance or even produce new content. This converts your archives into financial assets, saving or even eliminating content acquisition costs. Although you may not directly see this manifested as immediate revenue, this equates to true monetary value as it eliminates the need to purchase stock footage or shoot new content.

Consider a sports half-time show: incorporating clips and highlights from your archives to match ongoing discussions significantly enhances the viewing experience. In news production, it enables producers to create powerful stories that leverage archive stock on specific topics, such as a city’s evolution over time.

Direct Monetization – Generate New Revenue Streams

Direct monetization is the process of licensing or selling your content. One way can be by distributing finished content to consumers in a traditional TV, OTT or VOD format. A second, highly lucrative, revenue option is by licensing finished or raw content to other businesses through a digital storefront. This is the type of monetization that we will focus on for the rest of this blog.

The rise of digital storefronts allows businesses to create branded shopping experiences, with their content available for direct purchase. Customers can easily search to locate what they need, thanks to robust metadata, narrowing their searches to the exact section they require.

An additional use case is where portals provide licensees with access to the content they have purchased the rights to. A broadcaster, for example, may have paid for the rights to all of a league’s game replays and highlights for the year. So they leverage the storefront to access all the content they’re entitled to, without the need to pay for any specific clips.

Whereas storefronts present great revenue potential, they are only as good as the quality of their published content. Enter Dalet’s partnership with Veritone, which allows you to curate your most valuable assets through Dalet Flex’s powerful media management and Veritone’s AI-powered Digital Media Hub (“DMH”), featuring its commerce and monetization capabilities.

The joint offering enables a seamless workflow from content delivery through production, curation, packaging and distribution, empowering media, sports and entertainment organizations to monetize their digital media archives, while remaining in control of their content catalog.

By harnessing Dalet Flex’s versatile workflow engine and comprehensive metadata capabilities, media-rich organizations can decide exactly what is published to their store, and when. Business-driven automation monitors your entire archive, identifies suitable content and publishes it instantly, maximizing your store’s potential. This is key to monetizing content of all types and sizes, but particularly for sports and historical video archives.

Sports Content: the Need for Speed

Content monetization forms a crucial element of sports media workflows. In a world where sports rights are paramount, speed is the name of the game, with fans expecting swift delivery from the license holder. The faster your content reaches the storefront, the greater the revenue for you and your customers.

However, efficiency needs to go hand in hand with speed to stay ahead of the competition. The combination of Dalet Flex and Veritone’s DMH enables rapid delivery of proxies and metadata to your storefront, with your high-resolution content safely housed within your Dalet asset management environment.

Your customers can search, preview, and order their content through DMH, triggering the Dalet Flex workflow engine to automatically handle the request backstage which prepares and delivers the content based on the buyer’s requirements.

Uncover Hidden Treasures in Your Archives

The benefits of a storefront transcend sports distribution. Any company interested in licensing their content can now implement an effective direct monetization strategy. Be it a news organization or broadcaster licensing archives, or a studio leasing their shows to other businesses, a robust MAM and a modern storefront can unlock fresh revenue streams.

Our joint technology solution eliminates the need to duplicate data across siloed systems and brings increased value to any content owner. Dalet and Veritone share a common vision, committed to a long-term shared roadmap and outstanding customer service.

Whether you’re an existing Dalet Flex customer eyeing new revenue opportunities, or you’re in the market for a comprehensive solution that helps you manage and monetize your archives, the Dalet Flex and Veritone DMH integration is the answer.

No matter your niche, you’ve likely heard endless noise about the proliferation and importance of cloud technology. Though talk of the cloud’s seismic impact has become cliche, it really is driving huge shifts in capability across many industries — and media asset management (MAM) is no exception.

Media-focused businesses large and small are already reaping serious rewards from the integration of video archive systems with the cloud. These benefits go beyond simple cost savings and increased efficiency.

However, moving to the cloud is no easy feat. Whether you’re implementing a hybrid approach or looking to shift to a fully cloud-native solution, it’s important to follow a robust methodology. Enlisting the help of a partner who knows your business inside out and can provide the services you require is integral.

In this post, we explore the benefits of migrating your MAM to the cloud and outline how we as a business successfully implement such systems. But before that, let’s define what a cloud based Media Asset Management actually is.

What is a Cloud based Media Asset Management?

At its core, a cloud based Media Asset Management solution uses cloud services to store and serve content from media libraries as part of the production and distribution process.

However, in reality, “cloud-based” can have multiple meanings. It could refer to fully hosted solutions where every aspect of MAM is managed by a cloud provider. It may also refer to hybrid models, where certain elements remain on-premises while others are moved to the cloud.

It’s important to recognize that cloud based media asset management does not mean cloud-native MAM. At Dalet, we define a true cloud Media Asset Management system as an enterprise solution built with cloud-native architecture, made up of microservices and modular capabilities.

Key features of a cloud-native MAM include:

  • Unified Content Catalog: where disparate media libraries are brought together into easy-to-access cloud storage.
  • Workflow Orchestration and Automation: where standard and custom workflows are leveraged alongside AI technology to transcode, approve, publish, and more.
  • Application Ecosystem: where a suite of cloud-native tools is curated to address the specific technical and editorial needs of an individual media business.

Are you overwhelmed by your extensive media library ? Our customers experience unmatched scalability with our Cloud-native MAM, designed to grow with your business seamlessly. Request Your Personalised MAM Demo Today!

Can a Cloud based Media Asset Management Coexist with an On-premises Solution?

cloud based media asset management vs Cloud-native MAM

Regardless of your architecture, a cloud based Media Asset Management does not have to exclusively use cloud storage. It can integrate with multiple cloud providers and on-premise storage to operate in a hybrid model.

Traditionally, the moving of a MAM to the cloud may have been contextualized as a classic “lift and shift.” In other words, the moving of on-premises, physical server-based storage to a virtual cloud-based archive.

While lift and shift options bring the accessibility of the cloud and remove on-premise infrastructure needs, they do not take full advantage of the cloud in the same way cloud-native architecture does.

What Services and Workflows Does a Cloud-Native MAM Impact?

While many lightweight web-based solutions exist, they lack the power of a cloud-native MAM capable of improving access, collaboration, and efficiency on an industrial scale, based on user needs.

While all features might not all be used across every implementation, an enterprise cloud-native MAM system will be comprised of several key technical components:

  1. Cloud Storage: This is the backbone of a cloud-native MAM, providing scalable, secure, and cost-effective storage solutions for media assets across multiple storage tiers.
  2. Intelligent Ingest – Ingest any media with relevant and enhanced technical and editorial metadata at scale regardless of where the media originates from, for example, watch folders, camera cards, live feeds (SDI, SMPTE IP, compressed IP), or file uploads.
  3. Metadata Management: Essential for organizing, searching, and managing video files effectively. Cloud facilitates metadata capabilities through advanced tagging and indexing.
  4. Workflow Engine & Automation – In-house ability to quickly create workflows that efficiently distribute content at every stage of the media supply chain ensuring secure, reliable access to assets
  5. Transcoding and Encoding Services: Cloud services can automatically convert media files into various formats and resolutions, making them suitable for different distribution channels and devices.
  6. Integration APIs – These allow for seamless integration with other tools and systems such as NLEs, file transfer systems, AQCs, playout, monetization, analytics platforms, and more.

What are the Benefits of Implementing a Cloud-Native MAM System?

Following a successful migration, the benefits of implementing a cloud-native MAM system are numerous:

  • Scalability: The cloud allows you to easily dynamically scale your storage and processing needs up or down without significant upfront investment.
  • Accessibility: Users can access media assets from anywhere, at any time. Previously, clunky VPNs and high-speed internet connections may have been required to access media assets. With cloud a standard wi-fi connection is all that’s needed.
  • Improved Workflows: Automation makes it easy to orchestrate your media supply chain and manage your storage costs. You can control where files are and when they are accessible. Metadata can also be used to determine when files are moved to and from cold storage, based on the specific needs of your operation.
  • Cost Efficiency: Cloud reduces the total cost of ownership by removing the need for physical infrastructure and the associated maintenance costs, while improving your content security.
  • Security: Cloud-native MAM systems leverage cloud provider security measures, including data encryption and secure multi-factor access controls.
  • Content Monetization: Return on investment extends beyond financial savings. Cloud-native systems allow you to generate new revenue streams by licensing selected inventory to clients, partners and affiliates through integrations with modern digital storefronts.
  • Innovation: Cloud-native architecture allows you to quickly adopt new features and technologies as they become available in the cloud ecosystem.
  • Reliability: Cloud systems can take advantage of providers’ immense scale. No matter where you are in the world, you’ll always be near to a server location for quick, reliable access to archives. Cloud also removes barriers to high availability – AWS operates a “five nines” principle of 99.999% year-round availability and uptime.
  • Energy Savings: Cloud data centers are up to 5x more energy-efficient than traditional data centers, reducing energy costs for companies that migrate to the cloud.

How Long Does It Take to See Benefits from Cloud-Native MAM?

The timeline to realize these benefits can vary. Typically, organizations begin to see improvements in operational efficiency and cost savings within the first few months after implementation. However, the full scope of benefits, especially those related to strategic advantages like improved content distribution and market responsiveness, may take longer to materialize.

But an uptick in performance can come quickly. When our customer France Télévisions was faced with a nationwide lockdown in March 2020, staff had no direct access to the company’s systems. We were able to rapidly implement remote cloud workflow solutions and restore operational strength in just 4 weeks.

Preparing to Move to The Cloud

Whether you’ve decided to move all or part of your MAM system to the cloud, there are several things to consider. Moving to the cloud is a big task — one that nobody wants to have to do twice — so it’s important to make the right choices.

Before any implementation, it’s important that your MAM provider has a holistic understanding of your business. This involves understanding your business’ current MAM setup and workflows, exploring how you operate with other vendors, and determining your needs and ambitions moving forward.

Moving to the cloud isn’t about having the latest and greatest, it’s about bringing real value to your operation and enabling you to achieve sustainable growth.

While all media-focused businesses are likely to benefit from the features we’ve already listed, your organization will have specific pain points that a cloud MAM can ease. It’s important to state clear aims and objectives.

If you’re a broadcaster, the aim may be to drastically improve the speed and efficiency of content delivery to meet tight deadlines. In the film industry, the focus might be on collaboration among geographically dispersed post-production teams. Setting the precise specifications for the cloud features you want to exploit is key.

Over the past 33 years, we’ve built significant experience in managing large-scale, multi-million-dollar projects. Over this time, we’ve created a set of standardized tools and methodologies to ensure the successful delivery of our projects.

Key Milestones for Successful Cloud-Native MAM Implementation

Though this varies depending on the nature of the project, our phased implementation approach typically includes:

  • Project Initialization & Scope: working with you to define the scope of the project by setting high-level goals and objectives.
  • Business Analysis Requirements: performing a study to determine the functional requirements of the desired system. This study includes an in-depth analysis of workflow, infrastructure, interoperability with third-party systems, and data migration from legacy systems.
  • Project Planning & Design: writing a plan with detailed descriptions of key milestones throughout the project to ensure delivery is on time and within budget.
  • Risk Management: anticipating risks and developing workarounds as needed.
Integration & Customization Engineering: providing customization for integration with third-party applications, databases, legacy systems, or equipment – in other words, connecting to the tools your business already uses.
  • Implementation & Configuration: working with you and third parties to implement and configure the system in accordance with the requirements.
  • Acceptance Testing: planning and conducting acceptance test scenarios to verify that the implemented solution meets the desired system requirements.
  • Training and Coaching: providing custom training sessions to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Roll out: working with your organization to develop a proper support strategy, organize post-project evolution, and evaluate any future needs.

Initialization in Practice

So, what does this actually look like in practice?

Following kick-off, our Professional Services team will engage with relevant stakeholders in your business on an agile basis, working across a series of project sprints that typically last for 3 weeks at a time.

This outlines a simplified migration from on-premises to the cloud. In reality, businesses often deploy a hybrid approach or gradually move to the cloud in iterations over time.

Sprint Purpose
Project Initiation To define and agree on the project methodology and governance.
Sprint 1: High-level Requirements To agree on the design requirements for the solution and specifications for key workflows. Based on these requirements, the necessary design and build documentation is produced.
Sprint 2: Basic Installation To deploy the MAM media platform on the agreed infrastructure and configure basic workflows.
Sprint 3: Metadata Model To define the metadata model which is configured by engineers to specification before testing and validation.
Sprint 4: Ingest Workflow To specify the ingest workflow based on the requirements captured, before being configured, tested, and validated.
Sprint 5: Editing Workflow To specify the editing workflow based on the requirements, before configuring the platform and required integrations with the non-linear editing (NLE) process.
Sprint 6: Publication/Distribution Workflow To specify the publication/distribution workflow, before configuring the platform and the required integrations.
Sprint 7: Migration To agree on the migration methodology and execute the migration process before testing and validation. This process can take up to 6 weeks depending on the volume of data to be migrated.
Sprint 8: Final Acceptance To conduct tests to confirm that the implementation conforms to the high-level design specifications and the specifications of each sprint.
Training To deliver training to the customer super users and administrator. Oftentimes some or all of these sessions will be delivered before the project’s go-live date.
Project Closure To agree to the signed-off completion of all project activities. Dalet provides on-site coverage while the system goes into production.

Dalet’s distributed architecture means files can reside anywhere at any time, with the benefits of cloud felt even when some files remain in on-premises storage.

The Key to a Successful Setup Process

Whether implementing a hybrid or full cloud-native solution, some areas of the initialization are particularly important to get right.

Defining accurate technical specifications, including infrastructure, security, and storage requirements, is crucial. A consultant or cloud services operations specialist will take extra care in pulling together requirements. This person then becomes ultimately responsible for successful deployment on the appropriate cloud account.

We support integration with many providers, including AWS, Azure, Google, Alibaba, OVH and more. This is important to us, not only in terms of increasing consumer choice but also from a data recovery standpoint. Some customers house their entire media library with one provider. Dalet Flex mirrors this data with another provider as well, for extra security.

Dalet Ooyala Flex - Admin Tool

Security measures are integral. We provide recommendations for ports, services, anti-virus measures, and more. This may involve discussions about VPNs and secure data transfers, especially between cloud and on-premise locations, ensuring a secure environment.

When it comes to migration, specifications cover the movement of data from existing systems, possibly involving third-party solutions. The approach will vary depending on the media business in question. A move to the cloud might require the use of technologies like AWS Snowball for data transfer. It’s also common to deal with specific requests for data context preservation. This stage is one of the most complex and crucial, as it involves ensuring that existing data is accurately and efficiently migrated to the new system, considering all technical and functional requirements.

In the Long Term: How MAM Is Set to Evolve

Looking ahead, cloud-native MAM is set to become even more integral to media production and distribution workflows. Advances in AI and machine learning will further enhance metadata management and content personalization. Cloud providers will continue to improve security, compliance, and global reach, making cloud-native MAM an even more attractive option for media-focused businesses.

The evolution of cloud-native MAM is tied to the broader trends in cloud technology and media consumption habits such as a prevalence of mobile video and streaming. As the media landscape evolves, cloud-native MAM systems will become more sophisticated, enabling media companies to not only manage their assets more effectively but also to innovate and adapt to the change.

In order to make the most of these advancements, many businesses will need to update their approach towards collaboration. At Dalet, we believe that organizations should reimagine and reorganize how they work to maximize impact on operations and productivity. Our co-founder Stephane Guez provides more context in his post Media Trends of 2024: Big Events and Big Changes.

Ready to Realize the Benefits of The Cloud?

Implementing a cloud-native MAM successfully requires careful planning, a clear understanding of your organization’s needs, and a strategic approach to integration. The benefits of making the transition are clear, offering significant advantages in terms of cost, efficiency, and scalability, but it’s difficult to achieve all of this without the right partner.

IBC is the iconic event in which we introduced some of Dalet’s most innovative solutions, such as Dalet Galaxy back in 2012 and Dalet Media Cortex in 2018. The show is known for its energy and optimism, and thus we chose it as the stage for the launch of Dalet InStream and the release of Dalet Cut within the Dalet Flex media workflow environment.

However, these product launches at IBC2023 weren’t just about the new technology – it was bigger than that. Much bigger. It’s about creating a strong ecosystem and the value it brings to our customers.

From elastic ingest in the cloud to browser-based editing, digital-native news production, automated supply chains, multiplatform distribution, and archives management and monetization, Dalet is a cloud-native, subscription-based media solutions company uniquely positioned to help media-rich organizations overcome the constantly evolving production and distribution challenges. These challenges are particularly acute as we ramp up for a year of major events and continuous industry transformation through streaming and multi-faceted content offerings.

The BIG trends

It’s clear from the conversations around the show floor and presentations that two key macrotrends are impacting M&E. First and foremost, the global economic conditions. Consecutive months of rising inflation and interest rates are driving costs up, putting enormous pressure on operational budgets, which in turn are impacting the entire media supply chain. Second, the promise and potential (pitfalls) of AI. A gold rush of sorts, AI has exploded onto the scene with opposing opinions on its ability to sink or save M&E. While the hype is hard to ignore, what matters more than ever is solving real pain points and providing new ways of operating that deliver business value.

As broadcasters, content owners, and providers struggle to meet viewer demand, Dalet solutions optimize operations and enable you to better manage, distribute, and fully monetize your content on any platform with ease, speed, scale, visibility, and much more cost efficiency.

And as for AI, it has been a part of Dalet solutions for the last five years. The Dalet Media Cortex AI service platform is a mature, proven assistant that brings AI-infused tools and workflows for key use cases – automatic tagging, automation of captioning, and editing workflows – to make media professionals more productive and free up time for creative work. No fad or fly-by-the-night AI gimmick. It’s tried and tested. It’s a tool that provides real efficiency gains, and because we have invested in its development, it will be there for you in the long run.

Dalet is made for this moment

While the two overarching trends this year at IBC are wildly different, they do connect over operational efficiency. As the dust settles, it is operational efficiency that will be the hallmark that defines customer success. The ability to lower costs and repurpose or deliver content with the widest breadth and depth efficiently is essential. You need a platform that dynamically scales based on needs and tools that are trusted technology, not fads.

Our flagship solution, Dalex Flex, is at the center of the media workflow providing an ecosystem of connected apps that offer customers a collaborative environment to streamline their operation in a way that optimizes cost savings while offering the agility to launch new content and business initiatives.

Our suite of applications for news production and distribution, Dalet Pyramid, provides digital-native storytelling capabilities within a collaborative environment to plan, craft, and share stories from anywhere in real-time.

Talk to us about how we can make your operation more efficient and enable you to deliver more with ease. Our promise to you is a greater return on investment with agility to embrace new business models that enable you to thrive today and into the future!

Over the past 3 decades, our philosophy when creating solutions was not just to make all our customers’ content available to everyone at once. It has always been, and remains today, about the smartest way to arrange their production and distribution environment. The 100th NAB Show was a fitting venue to unveil the developments we have been working on in recent months. Our message and vision is clear and singular – Dalet’s new solutions will transform the way you manage and share assets across four key workflows: News Production & Delivery, Production Asset Management, Media Supply Chain & Distribution, and Archives & Monetization.

Let me tell you a bit more about the four SaaS solutions, underpinned by the proven Dalet Flex Media Logistics Platform and Dalet Pyramid News modules.

Faster News Production and Delivery

Despite constant changes, one aspect of broadcasting news has never changed: the need to keep your audience watching, wherever they are. And in today’s competitive landscape you need to effectively track viewer engagement for the best possible advertising and/or subscription metrics.

News production and distribution used to be primarily focused on TV broadcasts. Today, with a new social media platform emerging and trending every other week, there’s no single premier medium for audiences to consume news content. Global connectivity and mobile access enable news to spread at breakneck speed, so you need to produce and distribute platform- and device-agnostic news content every minute!

This is not only a technology challenge, but news delivery needs to also take into account the context around who’s consuming your news, where and how. Above all, news organizations need to understand that they don’t control newscasting anymore – the audience does. Anyone holding a smartphone is now a potential newscaster, so it is time to rethink how news is made, with journalists being able to produce content that works across all platforms – sometimes through, or together with, their audience.

With Dalet’s cloud-native and Storytelling 360 ethos, delivered through our newsroom solution, Dalet Pyramid, all that programming, integration and metrics design has been done for you. News professionals can work anytime, anywhere, with an intuitive web-based user interface that manages all aspects of your story from a single screen, including mobile devices: ingest, news gathering, archive mining, story assignments, rough cuts and voice over – all while collaborating with other team members. Dalet Pyramid empowers you to break down the newsroom’s walls and deliver to audiences everywhere quickly and efficiently, leveraging cloud-native, scalable and elastic infrastructure.

Streamlined Production Asset Management

The days where production teams, and their Production Asset Management (PAM) tools, were totally separate from the enterprise Media asset Management (MAM) solution, should be long gone. Running separate technology and work streams for production and other content teams is highly inefficient and time consuming. And yet, this model is still deeply rooted across media companies and teams.

Issues around file compatibility, transfer bottlenecks, metadata errors and more, slow down your ability to deliver content quickly and efficiently to multiple platforms. It’s time to implement a smarter way to arrange your production and sharing environment.

Dalet Flex provides a robust solution that integrates and orchestrates production and media asset management, from content acquisition to post-production and distribution, including archive. Creative teams can access content from anywhere through the web, their preferred NLE or mobile application. Storage is greatly optimized – eliminating the need to duplicate assets – and costs can be monitored across multiple projects. All this with a wide range of 3rd party integrations that remove the barriers between production and the rest of your operation.

Powerful media supply chain packaging and distribution

The Media & Entertainment industry today is all about revenue and cost of operations – only the most profitable will survive. Clearly understanding your media supply chain, including cost-per-asset, has become essential. For example, packaging a show or movie has a fixed cost, but if you have to create 300 versions for global distribution, your profit can very quickly vaporize. What was once a very intangible value needs to now be clearly quantified for individual line items.

These are just some of the elements that are required to run a superior media supply chain operation, which Dalet Flex can enable. From its inception, the platform was designed to easily break down and track each step within a production and distribution workflow, down to the asset level. It is easy to report on production, post-production and distribution costs and, thanks to its cloud-native architecture, internal stakeholders and external partners can access specific functions, given the correct access rights. You can now increase the agility of your operations and meet growing demands while reducing costs with Dalet’s Media Supply Chain solution.

Modern Archive Management and Monetization

If your organization has been in the media business for some time, it’s likely that a number of workflows and systems are still shackled to the legacies of the analog TV era. Assets stored on hard drives and removable discs made for operating systems that don’t exist anymore, in many cases still on magnetic videotape and 35mm film!

Repurposing and monetizing content by letting partners easily access and use it can sometimes cost more money than it’s worth. This is often due to siloed operations and disparate standards, both internally and between partner companies. Even after implementing cloud computing, migrating archived content to the cloud has been a hit-and-miss proposition. What’s more, simply sending huge media files to sit on a cloud computing service can potentially cost as much or more than just leaving them on a server in the corner of your production office.

And with the need to reduce business costs, scaling down operations, including storage, makes financial sense. How do you cost-effectively store media assets in the cloud? How do you identify the specific assets you need to share? How do you repurpose old content for a new language or the hearing-impaired?

At Dalet we believe we have the answers: make your production, storage and distribution hubs one and the same. Let the flexibility and smart management of the cloud store only what you need as business fluctuates. Dalet Flex for Archives and Monetization delivers all that and more.

With Dalet’s Archiving solutions, you’ll be able to migrate all your disparate archives into a single, intelligent, centralized media library. Find, reuse and monetize years of existing library material and reduce costs through operational efficiencies.

For me, the excitement of the NAB Show is all about experiencing the energy of this industry, discovering new ideas and technology, exploring emerging trends and reconnecting with customers, industry colleagues and friends. At this year’s show, I had the chance to share more about what Dalet has been up to and how we have shifted our product strategy to fully embrace cloud-native technologies and deliver what our customers will need to compete in the fast-changing media industry.

An Industry in Constant Evolution

As ever, walking the enormous halls of the Las Vegas Convention Center gives you plenty of food for thought. Just by looking around, observing exhibitor’s booths and demos, and attending conferences, you soak in the state of our very lively industry – one that has a true passion for change.

The trends that stood out for me, both from dozens of conversations and listening to conference speakers, were:

  • Technical and business transformation is a continuum: unlike the past, where internal changes were typically from point a to b (e.g. from analog to digital, from tape to server…), today content owners & distributors need the ability to constantly adapt, rather than going for a “big bang” approach. To respond, suppliers must build solutions that enable such continued evolution.
  • The consumer is in the driver’s seat: no matter how innovative your technology implementation might be, it needs to deliver to the needs of your audience. Plus you need to have a good solution to track and understand your consumers’ preferences if you want to remain competitive.
  • Similarly, any technology solution needs to be easy-to-use. With today’s digital-native workforce, if the tools are not intuitive, they simply won’t use them.
  • As a major global broadcaster stated, reducing time-to-market is the quickest and easiest path to cost savings, and technology should help by providing the backbone to streamline workflows, reduce manual work and human error.
  • And finally, as we’ve been predicting for several years, every media company is gradually moving their workflows to the cloud, initially through hybrid implementations. This also brings opportunities for AI-powered workflows that signal the beginning of a new era. According to the latest research by the IABM more than 30% of media businesses have started to adopt AI in their day-to-day operations.

I feel privileged to work in such a forward-thinking, innovative industry and look forward to seeing its continuous transformation.

My Takeaways from the Dalet Executive Breakfast

One of the highlights in our calendar is the Dalet Executive Breakfast at the NAB Show and this year’s edition marked the return of the event after a 3-year hiatus due to the Pandemic. In a large Vegas ballroom packed with industry leaders, top media executives and innovators, the Dalet team, together with speakers from Bloomberg Media and Fox Sports Australia, had the opportunity to exchange ideas on emerging trends and future challenges for industry.

These are the key thoughts I took away from the session:

Cloud Everywhere

  • In today’s media business landscape, content is consumed from the cloud, which makes it available everywhere.
  • There’s no question that embracing the cloud paradigm is essential to benefit from its operational efficiencies and cost benefits.
  • This demands a platform with a cloud-native architecture with modular services that can be scaled up and down as your business requires.
  • As the media industry adopts cloud-native solutions, how content is produced and managed needs to evolve too.

Get the Right Solution for Your Business

  • It’s important to take a gradual approach to cloud migration – a “big bang” approach can be too disruptive and detrimental to your operations.
  • Look for a single platform that can centralize your media workflows in the cloud leveraging scalable services and applications.
  • Choose the right technology partner to help your organization transform the way it works.
  • Choose a media management solution that will support your company’s evolution with a cloud-native architecture, integrated tools, AI and data-driven automation for increased efficiency.

Eliminate News Production Chaos

  • News production and distribution has become chaotic with hundreds of content sources and consumer destinations.
  • News storytellers need to produce the story wherever they are – time and versatility are of the essence.
  • Implementing a story-centric workflow based on centralized planning will enable news organizations to bring order to this chaos through orchestration, visibility, remote production and rich data models across the full story lifecycle.

You can watch here the Dalet keynote that I presented at the Executive Breakfast, together with COO Stephane Schlayen.

One of the big challenges media professionals face today is the ability to scale the capture of multiple video feeds, for example during live events. Let’s face it, recording multiple video feeds simultaneously for one or more events is (very) hardware-intensive! Organizations often invest in enough equipment to support their peak usage. It’s a major capital investment that comes with high operating costs.

You need a way to scale ingest on the fly and only pay for what you need. You want it to be centrally managed, accessed and shared in a way that makes sense at the lowest cost and highest speed possible. Oh… and you might also be interested in end-to-end workflows in the cloud, from ingest to production and distribution.

At NAB 2023, we are giving customers a first look at a next-generation technology that delivers all of this. It’s an innovative, flexible solution that takes advantage of the cloud elasticity to offload most, if not all, of ingest. Codenamed – “Dalet InStream” – the cutting-edge, cloud-native technology is built on the market-leading Dalet Brio I/O solution. Dalet InStream manages content ingest in the cloud with the highest degree of flexibility, agility and ROI.

Ingest capacity – Elasticity with no limits

The lynchpin of a cloud platform like Dalet InStream is scalability. As your ingest workload shifts and evolves, you can rightsize your operations on a minute-to-minute basis. No matter how large you grow, you only pay for the data pipeline you are using. This allows you to keep operating revenues constantly ahead of your technology stack expenditure.

Business model – Pay for what you need

Based on a flexible pay-per-use model, your costs will depend on resource usage. This means that you pay for what you need. You can scale up or down anytime. On average, media organizations can expect to save between 50 and 80 percent of their current on-premises costs.

So, if you are covering a special event like the Olympics or the World Cup, where the number of simultaneous ingest sources dramatically increases, Dalet InStream scales up the sources when you need them. There is no need for investing in additional infrastructure and hardware equipment like servers that will soon become outdated.

Workflow agility – Get started fast. Leverage existing capacity.

Dalet InStream is deployed in a day. No upfront deployment investment. Fully integrated with Dalet Flex, Dalet Pyramid or Dalet Galaxy, Dalet InStream delivers high quality dual encoding (proxy and high resolution) with the ability to edit growing files with Dalet Cut, our web-based real-time multimedia editor.

Simple and centralized – Web-based user interface

A web-based, centralized monitoring user interface allows users to securely monitor feeds, schedule ingests and crash records. An extensive API allows 3rd party systems to integrate smoothly. The technology preview also showcases how ‘Dalet InStream’ handles a wide variety of feeds in SRT, NDI or RTMP formats from Web sources, Zoom, or backpacks.

Always up-to-date and no maintenance

Dalet InStream is a SaaS solution that delivers access to continuous innovation and reduced administration time and costs. There’s no big payment because you have to replace systems as they age out – updates are software-based and immediate – which lets you spread your technology budget across much more cost effective outlays over a much longer term.

Typical ways of working have changed dramatically over the past few years. Remote work and hybrid models have become far more prevalent, for obvious reasons. This has increased the need for home access and remote contributions across the media production and distribution supply chain.

For many organizations, this has accelerated the transition to cloud-based media workflows solutions, which provide ways to address remote access challenges. But they do not come without technical trade-offs and associated business transformations can prove difficult.

The good news is that this switch does not have to be a definite decision between cloud vs on-premises: hybrid media workflows models can offer a more gradual transition path.

The Cloud Question

When considering a migration to cloud solutions, several key benefits are usually at the center of discussions. For Dalet Flex systems, we have found that cloud deployments bring great value to our customers especially regarding:

  • Elasticity: Media Workflows can require considerable processing power, especially when working with heavy production formats (e.g. Image Sequences). With auto-scaling capabilities based on Kubernetes, Flex can ensure cloud resources are made available when you need them, without generating extra costs when they are not used.
  • Removing network bottlenecks: if a significant part of your workforce is accessing your system from remote locations, assessing cloud vs on-premises hosting solutions is key. Hosting this system on-premises can require high network performances. Host this system in the cloud and part of this network pressure will be redirected accordingly.
  • Disaster Recovery: with numerous options available to deploy systems and back-up options in different datacenters and regions, disaster recovery is a key concern that the cloud helps address – and at a lower cost when coupled with auto-scaling functionality.

However, such benefits do not come without their own challenges that can complicate the strategic approach to either cloud or on-premises solutions. When it comes to media workflows, they are often linked to:

  • Performance: part of your workforce, especially editors, may require access to heavy high-resolution media files. Accessing those files through an internet connection can prove difficult and impact the user experience.
  • Egress costs: cloud providers traditionally charge a fee based on the volume of data read or downloaded from their data center. Solutions must be optimized to reduce those fees that can otherwise add up to significant bills.
  • Leveraging existing infrastructure: if you already have an on-premises solution to orchestrate your media workflows, you probably cannot afford to let the underlying infrastructure investment go to waste. If elasticity is a key strength of cloud deployments, relying on your existing infrastructure to provide a resources baseline can be a good approach.

Cloud vs. On-premises Media Workflows: The Hybrid Answer

Hybrid deployments do not require a strict cloud vs on-premises solution decision. With some components on-premises and others in the cloud, can allow you to get the best of both worlds. When it comes to Dalet Flex hybrid solutions, we can distinguish two main categories: multisite deployments and distributed deployments.

The Multisite Model

In a hybrid multisite architecture two Dalet Flex sites are deployed: one on premises, and one in the cloud. Each instance is a full Flex site, able to run independently from the other. We then deploy a Replication Gateway, in charge of replicating content and configuration between those sites. The result is two identical Flex sites, but able to run independently if required.

Several business requirements can lead us to advise a Flex multisite design – amongst them we often encounter:

  • Disaster Recovery: one great benefit of such architecture is the ability for each site to run independently, even if its sibling cannot be reached. For instance, if the connection between the cloud and your facilities is interrupted ,users working on your local network will still be able to connect to your on-premises site, while users working from home will still be able to connect to the cloud site – and an automated synchronization will occur when connections are restored.
  • Users spread around the globe: we work with a number of broadcasters whose workforce is spread over large geographical areas – sometimes across oceans. In such scenarios, opting for either a cloud or on-premises solution can become problematic. Users far from the physical location of an on-premises Flex site will encounter issues to get a smooth experience (even if only due to physical constraints such as latency). A multisite design can answer this concern.
  • Getting started with cloud: a multisite approach can also be a step towards a gradual transition to cloud-based solutions. You can imagine a first step with a cloud Flex system used only for DR purposes or for people working from home, and see this site gradually grow along with new business needs, or as you progressively reduce your Flex on-premises infrastructure.

This is only the tip of the iceberg: the flexibility of our tools governing exchanges and jobs management between sites allows us to further tailor the architecture to your business requirements, even in more complex scenarios:

  • Replication policies allow you to define rules narrowing down replication to selected assets and/or configuration items.
  • The Jobs Remote Engine service allows you to trigger jobs on your remote cloud site from your local site.

If you are interested in better understanding how a multisite Flex deployment could help you, contact us!

The Distributed Model

You have probably guessed the main downside of multisite deployments: costs. Running multiple full Flex sites will result in a larger technical footprint than a single-site deployment.

Depending on your business requirements, spreading the components of a single Flex site between the cloud and your premises, a distributed architecture can offer an interesting alternative that allows for more flexibility compared to an exclusive cloud or on-premises solution.

The design of a distributed Dalet Flex architecture begins with the deployment of a Dalet Flex instance either on-premises or in the cloud. When it comes to supporting cloud infrastructure providers, Dalet Flex works on Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform, Microsoft Azure and Alibaba Cloud, making it one of the most open and integrated media workflows solutions in the market. Once the initial deployment is in place, we will leverage Flex’s microservices architecture to implement some specific services in additional locations.

Let me give you a use case to make this clearer…

The On-premises Satellite

So, you’ve decided to migrate your content supply chain to a cloud infrastructure. This could be a business-driven decision, to reduce upfront investments and transition to OpEx and subscriptions costs, or a technical decision to accommodate for the increasing number of users working remotely, be it from home or other locations.

This, however, often brings new challenges, especially for production workflows where you may be ingesting large high-resolution files on premises, pre-existing tools deployed in your local infrastructure (QC, transcoding, editing…). Storing such files in the cloud may not be your best option: in addition to performance issues, egress costs (billed by most cloud providers when content stored in the cloud is read by external systems) can be prohibitive.

So you really need to get the best of both! Do consider the following architecture:

  • The Dalet Flex Core is in the cloud. This includes databases, storage for proxy files and all the applications that power both the front-end and APIs.
  • Your production storage will remain on premises, together with limited computing power running the specific Dalet Flex micro-services that manage high-resolution files and create proxy versions sent to the cloud, so that users can search and preview content in FlexMAM.

The microservices deployed on premises will be fully integrated into the cloud-hosted Flex Core, and can be driven with Flex’s workflow engine just as if they were cloud-hosted too! This hybrid deployment is typically implemented to manage the on-premises content lifecycle, together with smart archiving processes.

Media Workflows
Dalet FlexMAM – search and preview (proxy) assets and metadata, wherever they are stored

Alternatively, you may want to leverage cloud-based artificial intelligence services, like Dalet Media Cortex on the cloud-based proxy files, and trigger specific actions (e.g. archive, task allocation, transcoding….) on the corresponding on-premises high-res content.

All in all, the fact that microservices are spread across different cloud and on-premises locations is transparent for both Dalet Flex and your end users.

What’s the Catch?

When considering a distributed deployment, you should keep in mind that solid and secure cloud connectivity for the on-premises services to connect to the cloud instance is a must.

In addition, whereas in a multisite deployment on premises and cloud services can run independently, this is not the case in a distributed deployment. If a network outage interrupts the connectivity between the on-premises site and the cloud, local users will not be able to access FlexMAM and on-premises services will not be driven by the workflow engine as expected.

To mitigate such risks, we can work with you on Disaster Recovery workflows to keep you working during a possible outage. Of course, such DR transition would be smoother in a multisite architecture which brings additional redundancy, but at a higher cost.

Another point to consider is the need to access high-resolution content from remote locations, for example when video editors need to work from home. An option is edit on the proxy, and render on the local on-premises site… but if editing on the high-res content is required, this will increase the load on the internet connection that serves your premises.

And so… to Cloud or not to Cloud?

If you are pondering over the technical design of your current, or next, media workflows solution, the choice between on premises or cloud is not mutually exclusive. Hybrid solutions provide a gradual transition path to the cloud, be tailored to your business and technical requirements, and optimize your costs. All options come with benefits and trade-offs, which we have briefly summarized in this blog post.

If you’re ready to dive deeper, the Dalet engineering team can help you explore best practices and recommend an approach that meets your business priorities and technical constraints. To find out more about how Dalet Flex can transform your media workflows, get in touch.

Here Comes a New Year – What’s New?

Where did 2022 go? The year that was meant to bring stability is well and truly over, and with a fresh 365 days ahead of us, it’s a good time to take stock and reflect on what may be coming.

In terms of technology evolution in the M&E space, not much has changed: remote and hybrid work have become part of everyday life, increasing the need for a unified, collaborative user experience. And yet, so much has changed, with global events bringing financial instability, sudden technology shake-ups and continued M&A activity. In such a fluctuating environment, economics and efficiency will be key decision-drivers for Dalet and its clients in 2023.

Let’s delve deeper into what the year ahead may look like!

The Clash of Revenue Models Continues

If you’ve been in this business for a while, you’ll agree with me that we’re living (yet another!) paradox: the acceleration of viewership habits from linear broadcast TV towards online platforms does not correlate with the advertising revenue/profit margins of traditional TV… yet.

This means media businesses need to continue to deliver for audiences across all platforms, often in spite of financial viability. Even subscription models that seemed to yield good results are now being shaken up by the strong return of advertising (FAST – Free Ad-supported Streaming TV – or AVOD – Advertising-based Video on Demand – anyone?) and the relentless increase in cord-cutting.

In the context of news production, we will see an increase in viewers subscribing to individual news streaming services, both with well-known news brands and newcomers producing hyper-targeted content.

Such a fragmented landscape will only make it more complex for your business to reach all audiences, some of which will consume your content through channels that are not your biggest source of revenue. The financial scales will gradually tip over towards online models, but 2023 will still see an imbalance in audience monetization.

Goodbye Monoliths, Hello Modular Solutions!

With audiences driving change in the M&E space, content providers need the ability to pivot quickly based on their business needs. As we work with our clients on their changing content management and media technology requirements, we see a clear trend towards modular systems and applications. What does this mean in practice?

  • Media companies look for systems that are quick and easy to deploy. Stakeholders, both investors and users, have reduced patience for systems that take months to go live.
  • A modular system is easier to maintain and upgrade, as you can selectively work on specific components without disrupting the rest of the tools. This is specifically important in news production, where sharing and collaboration is often time-sensitive.
  • Media organizations can integrate their own solutions by bringing together multiple best-of-breed providers or developing their own.
  • It is easy to add on new functionality. For example, if I want to add distribution capabilities to my production system, the ability to spin up new modules, rather than buying a completely new solution, is key.

Most importantly, even if the back-end architecture needs to be modular, providing a unified user experience is paramount: those who use the tools want a seamless experience when moving between functional areas. In other words, as a news reporter, I want my video editor to be integrated with my planning and script-writing tools.

It’s Time to Upskill Your News Team

At Dalet we have been talking about a story-centric approach to news production for some time, but we believe this will be pivotal for newsroom success in 2023. With a story-centric approach, news teams can plan and produce more efficiently, as well as deliver news stories simultaneously to all platforms. But why?

News consumption is increasingly moving from traditional linear TV shows to mobile devices and online platforms, and any news producer worth their salt needs to keep up with these changing demands. We call this digital-first production, where the story is a multi-faceted component in an integrated production workflow. Imagine you inconveniently get headline-busting, breaking news in between your flagship TV newscasts – would you let your competitors go live first on their digital platforms?

It is time for newsrooms to rethink their workflows and re-skill their teams for digital-first production. We still see news companies where the production teams for linear TV and digital platforms are siloed, often with digital producers waiting to repurpose content produced for linear TV shows. This is not only slow, but also inefficient, as news companies spend more time and effort in digital production, but at a fraction of the revenue.

2023 will see more newsrooms transition to digital-first production, with story-centric teams that can deliver multi-platform content. This requires careful planning, both in technology and skills.

Want More Efficiency? Go Cloud-Native… and AI

Leveraging the cloud for video production and distribution has become an inevitable reality, swiftly accelerated by post-pandemic needs. However, cloud adoption only makes sense if it introduces significant efficiency and savings. This can only happen when you work with truly cloud-native tools.

Cloud infrastructure is a powerful enabler for distributed work and collaboration. Remote production workflows have evolved in leaps and bounds, with production teams collaborating from anywhere in the world and delivering powerful content, thanks to cloud infrastructure. Content creators are finally ready to use cloud technology the way it is designed.

However, you won’t realize efficiency by lifting-and-shifting your on-premises installation to a cloud deployment. This will become very expensive, very quickly. Cloud-native means the solution is designed and built from scratch with cloud infrastructure in mind, with maximum microservices-driven elasticity and flexibility (did anyone mention modular solutions?).

Let me illustrate this through live sports production: say you have to simultaneously record 30 games across different locations. That day you need the ability to record 30+ live feeds, and perhaps again a couple of times a month. With an on-premises installation, you’d have to size for the worst-case scenario, with the consequent cost. With cloud-native tools and a flexible, SaaS-based model, you can scale up and down as your business needs.

Couple an effective cloud implementation with workflow orchestration and Artificial Intelligence (AI) and you’re likely to reap benefits, fast. AI is maturing, and seeing increased adoption in production workflows, with time-saving capabilities such as speech-to-text transcription, subtitle translation, and metadata creation. Together with a solid workflow engine that automates production and distribution, you’ll be well placed to achieve that key goal for 2023: efficiency.

It’s Good to Talk

Is your 2023 technology and business plan all set for execution? I’m sure some of the points we make in this post resonate with you, so why not contact Dalet to discuss how we can help your organization future-proof your production, management, and distribution workflows in 2023, and beyond?

The cloud is (finally) becoming the new norm for media companies. Customers are expecting vendors to offer service and platform options that are delivered using SaaS and subscription models. But not all vendors are fully in the cloud game just yet and for them, there is no way to quantum leap their products forward.

Vendors had to invest in cloud development and operations early as bringing a robust enterprise MAM solution into the cloud requires years of planning, and deep understanding of the vast array of media workflows, both legacy and emerging. And while we believe cloud is the first choice of infrastructure going forward, especially after on-premises investments are amortized, there are still use cases for which fully cloud-based deployments are not necessarily the best solution. This could be for a number of reasons including, access to bandwidth, costs of heavy file format processing/storage/egress and more. Customers need options so they can carefully evaluate and depending on their business requirements, take the best path forward. Thus for the near future, you need to have your foot firmly in both camps.

That’s why we began developing our cloud and hybrid solutions in 2014 and have been offering a wide range of options for our customers at every step of the journey.

Today, the ecosystem of Dalet cloud-native solutions, services, APIs and integration functions are well developed and mature. Our devops techniques, architecture patterns and development best practices are established and reliable. More than one hundred of our customers benefit from full cloud or hybrid systems deployed and maintained by our team. Dalet customers can embark on their migration to the cloud today – whether it is a hybrid approach or 100% cloud – with confidence.

As you investigate enterprise MAM options, it’s important to understand the vendor history to ensure your future.

Taking flight

The past few years have seen a rise of creative teams outside of traditional broadcast requiring tools for production, management, and distribution of media content. Innovative and cloud-born solutions were developed to address specific pain points, greatly helping creative teams around the globe. But enterprise-grade media workflow solutions, ones that combine advanced media asset management capabilities with workflow orchestration, media-specific tools and integrations with the wider ecosystem, are complex and require professional services to deploy. For these customers, the total cost of ownership (TCO) was often prohibitive.

To better address this industry need, Dalet expanded its cloud-native media logistics solution, Dalet Flex, adding SaaS options to the product lineup. This approach ensured that we met the needs of a wider range of customers – from specific workflows to advanced enterprise scenarios that require customization. Make no mistake – adopting new methodologies in distributed deployments, managing new paradigms in security and overhauling your internal data delivery environment is not a walk in the park. However, there is no standing still in this industry and we are proud to lead the way and have a solution that fits our customers at every stage of their journey to the cloud.

Technical Architecture Transformation

With new cloud products and the plugin/integration market expanding every day, we employed an agile approach to development. Our first step was to build Dalet Flex architecture to fully rely on micro-services. This modular approach, combining small services rather than relying on a larger “monolithic” software, was key. Microservices allow for better scalability and support the heavier load coming from multiple tenants with better performance. It also allows us to upgrade individual services without having to turn off the entire system and disrupt customer operations.

Another prerequisite was to ensure that the solution has auto-scaling capabilities to quickly and reliably answer operations requiring heavy computing resources. With media file sizes constantly increasing, the ability to handle massive file transactions is key. Auto-scaling also enables us to scale smoothly as new tenants are on-boarded, minimizing risk of unexpected customer downtime.

The introduction of SaaS options also adds an additional security concern: ensuring tenant isolation. We are constantly developing and strengthening an internal workflow called Secure Development Life Cycle (SDLC), which reduces the number of vulnerabilities in our systems while taking advantage of all the benefits the cloud has to offer.

The crucial element

An important element of any technology class constantly in flux is the right people. Adopting the cloud isn’t only a technology issue, it’s a staffing issue – without the right people it will take longer, cost more and could leave you further behind.

It’s very easy to get lost in the weeds, especially when the process of discovery and adoption will so fundamentally change the path in front of you. You need a trusted partner that can guide you through the maze. Dalet’s revamped customer experience, from on-boarding to business as usual, really makes the difference. Over the past three years, Dalet significantly expanded its customer services resources and shifted its focus towards cloud-native, subscription-based media workflow solutions. Experts like Benjamin Zores focus on ways to optimize how Dalet deploys, upgrades, supports and maintains mission critical cloud environments.

At Dalet, we have kept our eyes on the ultimate prize. We did not move to the cloud to tick a box that says we have a cloud option. Dalet was remade in the cloud with options for customers to migrate at their pace into the next generation of media workflows. It was an endeavor that was years in the making.

If you are looking for an experienced partner to help you make the migration to the cloud, connect with us. We have traveled the path and know it well.

One of the biggest challenges in today’s newsrooms is enabling journalists to produce stories from anywhere. Staff in the field need to be able to work as effectively as in the newsroom, so finding the right tools to do it becomes crucial. Dalet Pyramid, our cloud-native news solution, is the outcome of years of work to develop a real collaborative and mobile ecosystem for producers, journalists, and editors to work together, even when they are miles apart. Following the introduction of our solution for Centralized News Planning in March, we will today focus on the Remote Editing offering.

The World We Knew

It is just another day at work, newsrooms are trying to produce stories as fast as possible. News breaks, the producer assigns a story, and the journalist hits the road. Once in the field, the journalist shoots footage, assembles a rough cut, and heads back to the newsroom. After getting content from the on-premises system and working with the video editor, the news professional gets approvals and finally send the story to the rundown. Does it sound familiar?

To produce a story, the journalist had to meet several people and depend on a physical newsroom. At that time, we could travel and meet anyone anywhere. Going back and forth to the newsroom was not a big deal, until our circumstances changed. We had to be spread apart and confined in our own spaces. The ability to produce news was jeopardized, and the newsroom dynamic as we knew it was gone.

A New Wave in (Remote) News Production

There is something we learnt from the pandemic: things will never be the same. Even if most lockdowns were lifted, remote and hybrid work is not going anywhere. Newsrooms must adjust and implement different strategies to produce stories in this new context.

At Dalet, we designed collaborative tools for news professionals to thrive in any environment. We recently introduced The Dalet Pyramid Remote Editing solution, a platform that extends the power of newsroom systems outside their physical location, having no need for the producer or any journalist to be in the newsroom. Our vision is to make news creators — producers, editors, journalists, etc. — feel that all are in the same space, collaborating and crafting news together, even when they are miles apart.

The remote-native solution is a platform to produce and edit news stories. Journalists have access to assignments, the newsroom’s content, and production tools in real- time, allowing the team to have an immersive experience.

The “plug and play” Remote Editing solution is offered in subscription to allow customers to use what they need, when they need it, and scale as they grow.

New Tools for News Production

Pyramid Cut: Web-Based, Fast-Paced Media Editor

Pyramid Cut, our browser-based multimedia editor, was specifically designed for modern news storytelling. The cloud-native solution was built around the journalist’s needs when producing and editing video stories. We conveyed all aspects of news story editing in an intuitive format for professional and non-professional editors.

Pyramid Cut is more than a media editing tool, it is an entire collaborative ecosystem for news creators. Besides offering the expected transitions, graphic generation, and voice over recording, it allows journalists access to media, scripts, and assignments — features shared with Dalet Pyramid’s Centralized Planning solution. This fluid exchange of information between Pyramid Cut and Pyramid planner, substantially improves productivity and quality when creating news stories.

One of the most significant features of Pyramid Cut is the ability to work with growing files, allowing the journalist to start editing without having to wait for the live streaming to be over. The journalist or editor can access the video files from the cloud and edit a preview for a digital team or the rundown.

Pyramid Xtend: Native Plug-In for Adobe Premiere Pro

Pyramid Xtend gives journalists seamless integration between Dalet Pyramid, and Adobe Premiere Pro. Pyramid Xtend allows Premiere Pro users to access media, scripts, even edit on the cloud using remote rendering through Adobe Media Encoder. This major improvement enables Adobe Premiere users to fully join the newsroom’s operation.

For newsrooms using Dalet Galaxy, video editors not only access media, scripts, and assignments inside Pyramid Cut or Pyramid Xtend; they also have access to the newsroom content inside Dalet Galaxy. These elements are fully integrated to produce rich and collaborative experiences for journalists and editors when creating stories.

Let’s get into more detail about how the media, scripts and assignments are orchestrated in Dalet Pyramid to enable a true collaborative workflow.

Media Bin

The Media Bin is a bucket where all the digital assets concerning a specific news story are gathered. Those assets could be video and audio files, pictures, graphics, PDFs, social posts, wires, external links, etc. The Media Bin also includes rushes, and the final versions for different angles: TV, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, etc.

The Media Bin encourages a new level of collaboration. Its content can be accessed by broadcast or digital teams working on the same story. Even a broadcast crew in another facility can access the Media Bin. So, what’s the benefit? It allows Digital and broadcast teams — in any location — to use, not only source materials to craft their own stories, but to repurpose each other’s stories. This collaborative method reduces duplication of work, maximizes productivity and improves publication time.

Script Editor

The Script editor is the section where journalists write the story that will be played from the production control room. The journalist can, in real-time, collaboratively write the script with another journalist. The Script Editor connects to the teleprompter, allowing the newscaster to read directly during the broadcast.

Within Pyramid Cut, the editor also has access to the assignment view — right next to the Media Bin and Script editor. The editor sees the assignments and the track of the story.

With these elements, seamlessly designed in Pyramid Cut, we are giving full visibility and enhancing productivity for news creators.

The Best of Both Worlds

There are certain benefits for newsrooms using both media editors. Pyramid Cut can be the go-to for journalists in the field or in the newsrooms, while Pyramid Xtend, for Adobe Premiere Pro editors, can be used for more advanced editing jobs and long-form content.

Both, Pyramid Cut and Adobe Premier Pro — are fully immersed in the Dalet ecosystem, having access to the Media Bin, Script Editor, assignments, and Dalet Galaxy’s content. The editors can also access the Dalet Pyramid planner, Dalet AmberFin, Dalet Media Cortex, and other tools of the Dalet ecosystem.

Let’s Do it Together!

What once was an unviable idea became a vital solution for millions of broadcasters and companies worldwide to thrive in our new reality. Incorporating Dalet’s remote Editing solutions into your newsroom is not a matter of improving processes but about belonging to a new norm.

Contact us to discover the Dalet Pyramid Remote Editing solution. We will show you how it can extend your news production capabilities to tell and share news stories.

The return of the NAB Show in Las Vegas was nothing short of amazing. It was very special to be able to meet again with our customers, partners, and the media community as a whole after a two-year hiatus. Even though attendance was down by about half in comparison to pre-COVID shows, those attending were business and technology decision makers coming with real-life problems to solve and upcoming initiatives to discuss. The quality of the interactions was very high. More importantly, the 2022 NAB was held in a very positive atmosphere and it represented an exciting comeback for the industry.

Looking at the trends

What we saw at NAB was aligned with the trends identified by Caretta Research ahead of the show and what we have seen since the beginning of the year. The first trend we saw is that investment in media technology is now driven by problem solving. While new technology, prototypes, and product reveals still make the headlines, the NAB Show has now clearly taken the trajectory of a business show. Business, editorial, and creative decision makers are looking for solutions to the problems they encounter along the media value chain, especially around remote production and collaboration, scale and automation, as well as digital-native content operations.

A second trend noticeable at the event is the desire for flexible deployments and the demand for modular technologies. Media-rich organizations want to “future-proof” their operations and to enhance the management of components’ lifespan. Open platforms and “operating systems”, seamlessly integrated into the wider ecosystem, are becoming the focal point of media production, management, and distribution workflows, often with marketplace models.

The third major trend is about cloud-native architectures and how they enable products that are faster, more reliable, and more affordable. SaaS offerings with a lower cost of entry are being brought to market, thanks to multi-tenanted architectures that enable economies of scale. With the elasticity of the cloud at their fingertips, media organizations can quickly scale resources as required with control over budgets.

We at Dalet are embracing these trends to always bring more value to our customers with transformative products. The launch of Dalet Flex for teams, a SaaS solution that provides professional-grade media logistics tools to smaller crews and organizations, is the perfect reflection of that.

Making time to talk

Communication is important with our customers. We truly believe we work better as a team. Open communication is at our core, and co-innovation is a mantra. We’ve discussed countless number of times with our customers and partners how agility has become so important. The ability to deploy solutions easily and to be extremely fast in launching new initiatives has become paramount. SaaS is a key ally in this endeavor.

Achieving scale through automation and workflow orchestration is still very high on the list for our customers, and our products have been making a difference in that area for many years. In addition, and together with smart, AI-powered tools, media-rich organizations are now putting much more focus on UI and UX, a big shift in our industry. These discussions with customers are becoming more common, as well as more advanced in terms of the strategies they deploy to distribute the right content to the right audiences on the right platforms. Helping customers scale and streamline their operations is a major focus.

Conversations around onboarding, training, user experience, and customer success are also much more common. These are very much valued by all stakeholders. Dalet is a customer-centric company; and we are building the teams and the structure around customer success. We help media-rich organizations maximize ROI and outcomes on their investment and overall satisfaction with a simple philosophy: their success is our success.

So, book a meeting with us sometime. It’s great to talk!

Showcasing Dalet latest innovations

In the same mindset of remaining customer-centric, Dalet’s leadership team and media workflow specialists were at the event, showcasing our latest innovations in content workflow solutions, cloud-native technology, and user experience.

Attendees stopping by the Dalet booth were able to discover two offerings for the first time, Dalet Flex for teams offered as-a-service for all teams with digital media management and multiplatform delivery requirements, and Dalet Pyramid solutions to enable modern storytelling and news production practices with centralized planning, remote editing, and digital-native production capabilities.

The industry recognition we received for these new offerings was a proud moment for the #DaletTeam. While Dalet Pyramid won NewscastStudio’s Broadcast Production Award for “Best New Product or Service – Production”, Dalet Flex for teams was awarded “Best in Show” from TVTech.

As a key technology partner and their chosen Media Asset Management partner, Dalet was also present at the AWS booth. Both Dalet Flex as-a-service and Dalet Pyramid running on AWS infrastructure were on display and received a warm welcome. Dalet and AWS power some of the most advanced cloud-native and hybrid media workflows.

Dalet Flex for teams was a featured demo at the AWS booth on the 2022 NAB show floor

What comes next? Focus.

The question we find ourselves often asking is “What comes next?”

For us at Dalet, we keep our attention on the value we provide through state-of-the-art media workflows – the life’s blood of any newsroom, sports coverage, content owner, or media production facility. This is what we do, and we focus on it. Today, our customers not only evaluate products but also roadmaps, development priorities, and company culture. They buy from companies they want to work with. We are more than software.

With that in mind, I’ll conclude this article with a quote from Dalet’s co-founder and chief technology officer, Stephane Guez:

“We’re thrilled to reconnect in person with our partners and customers to share our latest innovations for digital media workflows. We’ve been hard at work investing in and developing modern technologies to meet the demands of today’s media rich organizations. To support this, we have expanded the Dalet Team with media, cloud, and security experts whose focus is to enable wider market adoption of Dalet solutions beyond the traditional borders of broadcast. These investments coupled with our intense R&D and project management efforts have enabled us to deliver an NAB showcase that we’re incredibly proud of: budget-friendly pre-configured, convenient, yet secure workflow cloud-based offerings with state-of-the-art UX and UI experiences customers expect.”

We are part of an industry and a world in a state of permanent change. Mature and stable like a large corporation, yet agile and growing like a start-up, we continue to shape the future of media production, management and distribution workflows. Join us!

Getting high-value content to audiences is not getting any easier. In a world where remote work is increasingly common, and media is consumed through dozens of different platforms, it can be hard to keep up! Large libraries can be spread across multiple locations, on-premises or in the cloud; and making sure the right content, in the right version and format, ends up on the right platform at the right time could give headaches to anyone.

With a powerful combination of web-based, user-friendly tools and powerful automation capabilities, Dalet Flex helps media-rich organizations:

  • Centralize – Gather their content in a consolidated repository, build a valuable and living archive
  • Manage – Organize their repository, enrich, curate, and share content
  • Collaborate – Support a hybrid or remote workforce, review and approve media assets with purpose-built tools
  • Orchestrate – Drive their media supply chain with a workflow engine
  • Connect – Integrate their content repository with 3rd party tools and automatically leverage additional tools, such as Artificial Intelligence services
  • Monitor – Control on-going processes in a single, web-based, monitoring center
  • Distribute – Automate content packaging and distribution across traditional, digital, and social platforms
  • Save – Reduce storage costs with better and automated management of assets’ lifecycle

Bringing Professional Media Tools To Creative Teams Everywhere

Dalet Flex has been an enterprise-grade solution for the last eight years, serving the needs of large media organizations including the likes of Public Broadcasting System affiliates, Arsenal Football Club, Audi, and HBO, just to name a few. Indeed, the adoption of Media Asset Management and Supply Chain orchestration solutions usually comes with advanced deployment and integration projects.

But what about smaller, independent creators and content owners who would find this commitment outside of budget and outside of practical application? Still, these teams need the power and the applications of Dalet Flex, offering customizable work environments, automation (with easily edited workflows), and purpose-built media tools.

Well, we have good news for them: Dalet Flex is now available as a service.

Your Media Workflow Solution As-A-Service

While Dalet already had several products available as SaaS in its portfolio, such as Dalet AmberFin and Dalet Media Cortex, it became evident to us that Dalet Flex should also be available as a service.

Success with SaaS, both for Dalet and the customer, relies on faster deployments of upgrades, ready-to-execute workflows, and the ability to offer Dalet Flex at an affordable price point to get started. But this is only the tip of the iceberg: it is the revamped customer experience that really makes the difference, with better on-boarding experience but also improved Customer Success services and Knowledge resources.

Another huge advantage of SaaS is being able to offer Dalet Flex for teams in a variety of plans and packages for what your business needs. Ten people on your team? We have a Dalet Flex for teams plan designed for you. What if your media management crew is fifty? Again, we have you covered.

Focus On Your Craft, We Take Care Of The Rest

Cloud-native from its inception, Dalet Flex for teams is completely hosted, monitored, and maintained by Dalet, in our partner environment: Amazon Web Services (AWS).

This means that while you work on your various creative projects and produce the best media for your needs, Dalet delivers upgrades for new and innovative features, and ensures the maintenance and security of the products’ underlying infrastructure. This represents significant savings especially for smaller organizations without advanced IT and DevOps capabilities, avoiding the constant purchasing of upgrades or waiting for the one major upgrade that completely changes your operations. Upgrades happen gradually, avoiding disruption of your productivity.

Perhaps that is the biggest appeal of the development for Dalet Flex for teams: the encouragement of creativity by letting you focus solely on your craft and your business. This was the inspiration in developing and releasing Dalet Flex for teams.

Dalet Is With You On This Journey

Whether you are enterprise-level or a smaller production team, Dalet remains committed to making the integration of our solutions into your workflows and media productions seamless. We have only built upon our already available (and highly praised) training resources with additional classes from Dalet Academy. Those who invest in Dalet Flex for teams will have access to the same educational resources and coaching services, along with our growing library of self-service learning materials.

Then there is the Customer Success Management team, a dedicated team of Customer Success Managers that accompanies our customers through each step of their journey to help them succeed with Dalet solutions and services.

Finally, those who subscribe to Dalet Flex for teams will be supported by our Cloud Operations team, making sure the overall performance and security of our cloud services remains state-of-the-art.

Welcome to Dalet Flex for teams

Dalet Flex for teams, an award winner at the 2022 NAB in Las Vegas for Best of Show from TV Tech, is ready to take your productivity to the next level, bringing to your media crew all the capabilities and power of Dalet Flex, in a scalable solution. Pricing is offered in three subscription tiers — Essentials, Growth, Advanced — based on the range of users accepted for a given Tier, support levels, specialized features (Single-Sign-On, number of integrations, …), and included cloud usage.

From inception, we, at Dalet, have been committed to improving the way media professionals create and share stories. We are constantly working with journalists, editors, producers, engineers, and technologists, to provide innovative solutions for planning, producing, and sharing news in our digital world.

As a result, we have developed three solutions, powered by Dalet Pyramid, to expand the power of newsrooms running Dalet Galaxy. They’re all “plug-and-play”, which means that the software is ready to use without reconfiguration, making it easy to pick one, two, or all three solutions. The integration is seamless, bringing to life a combination of robustness and agility, with the power of collaborative, cloud-native, and web-based tools for remote and digital teams.

Let me share more details about these solutions.

Centralized Planning

One of the biggest challenges news organizations face today is visualizing and orchestrating work. This challenge is especially acute for:

  • large media organizations with multiple TV stations
  • news organizations with distinct teams for broadcast and digital
  • newsrooms with remote and field journalists

In some cases, we see a combination of all these.

Dalet Pyramid’s Centralized Planning is a direct response to that challenge. It allows news organizations to visualize, manage, and assign stories at the corporate level using a powerful, yet user-friendly tool for multi-site, multi-team, calendar-based news planning.

Let’s dive in…

The planner solution is intuitive and easy to learn. The assignment desk can see stories across teams, newsrooms and multiple locations worldwide. This helps chief editors assess what stories to choose and prioritize while increasing multisite collaboration and effective decision-making.

Chief editors — whether part of the assignment team or producers — can also appoint stories to field journalists. The assignment desk can share links from Dalet Galaxy or any video-hosting website and communicate with remote journalists using the integrated chat tool. On the other hand, journalists can share their work progress and keep all teams up to date.

Being a cloud-native solution, Dalet Pyramid allows the assignment editor to work remotely. They can access scripts and rundowns stored in the existing Dalet Galaxy platform directly from a browser. This capability brings a new level of agility to teams, removing the constraints of physical locations.

But the Centralized Planning solution not only improves visibility between multisite teams and allows them to work remotely; it actually solves a bigger issue. It gives storytellers the ability to plan and craft stories from a planner rather than from a rundown. Why is that beneficial? Amongst other aspects, because it allows news organizations to simultaneously approach linear (TV and radio) and non-linear (OTT, social media, digital outlets, …) platforms. No need to wait for the TV story to be finalized to repurpose the content for digital platforms. Your digital team can cover an important story as soon as it breaks. This is a significant evolution from how newsrooms traditionally work.

Last but not least, rundown-centric workflows are fully compatible with planning-centric workflows. Newsrooms can evolve at their own pace. You can read more about our centralized planning approach in this article.

Remote Editing

Visualizing is crucial to planning and choosing what stories to cover, produce, and publish. But how can we actually produce content remotely, faster and more collaboratively?

Journalists often don’t have the luxury of time. They need to edit video while in the field, so how to access source materials, edit multimedia content, work with colleagues, and get approvals quickly and securely?

With Dalet Pyramid, we are bringing a state-of-the-art Remote Editing solution to our users. Our web-based editing software — Pyramid Cut — is more than just a tool, it is a fully collaborative ecosystem to produce and distribute content for all media types. In addition, creative teams can use Dalet Xtend to integrate Adobe Premiere© Pro© within the Dalet ecosystem. Video editors, producers, and journalists can simultaneously create and publish stories on digital outlets and/or TV, regardless of their location.

Let’s dive in…

A producer assigns stories to a field journalist — from the newsroom or anywhere else. Using the script editor within Dalet Pyramid, the journalist collaboratively writes scripts and can share video assets with the producer, video editor, or any other user that might be part of the project.

With Dalet Pyramid Cut the field journalist can upload rushes, access source content, edit a video version and collaborate with the team to create other angles or improve the final piece.

Then, the field journalist can get approvals and even publish the content directly on digital media, while different video angles are being edited to be placed in the newscast or published to other platforms. Meanwhile, a video editor can use Dalet Xtend to open the initial cut within Adobe Premiere Pro and enhance or repurpose for additional outlets.

Dalet Pyramid Cut, is a blazing fast, online multimedia editor that has been designed to produce TV, digital and radio news content quickly from anywhere. It is your perfect storytelling companion, from rough cuts to project creation, leveraging the MediaBin for collaborative workflows.

Digital Production

This solution addresses the needs of any news organization with digital production requirements. It combines the power of assignments, production, and distribution in one solution.

The challenge newsrooms face today is finding ways to make their digital teams take the lead for their own stories, working collaboratively with broadcast teams, all within the same newsroom media asset management platform.

The Dalet Pyramid-powered Digital Production solution allows news organizations to address these challenges. Your digital team, including remote staff and contributors, can access Dalet Galaxy’s content library and use existing assets to produce stories in each digital and social platform’s native format. This allows your organization to address the multiple expectations of your different audience segments.

Let’s dive in…

The user-friendly, Kanban-like planning interface helps digital teams to keep track of their work and have visibility across all projects. The progress of the story and the planning of each stage of the production process is also mapped out. The whole digital team is aware of what stories are being produced and which are in the queue.

Dalet Pyramid Cut provides a robust, web-based video editing tool designed for digital-first and remote content production. You can write your script, edit content, manipulate captions, record your narration, adjust aspect ratios, add digital graphics and publish your story, all without leaving the production environment!

Your digital team will also be able to pre-configure the solution to publish to different social and digital media outlets. They can also templatize graphics for different video requirements based on the platform, and even render the footage in Dalet Galaxy on-premises while editing from anywhere — using Dalet Pyramid Cut in the cloud.

This is just the beginning!

We have designed these next-gen news workflow solutions, powered by Dalet Pyramid, to provide a natural progression for newsrooms running Dalet Galaxy, expanding their workflow with new, value-added capabilities.

Available as subscription, these solutions will bring you smooth, regular updates as well as top-notch security, world-class support, and full scalability for you to meet the needs of tomorrow’s news operations, today.

Protecting your investment, preserving your flexibility, and investing in your future! What is not to like?

We cannot wait to start collaborating! Contact us to know more about how Dalet Pyramid solutions can help you to take your Dalet Galaxy newsroom to the next level.

At Dalet, we’ve always been a security-focused company, and in a world of more connections (and threats), our approach has evolved. Inputs are increasing, content assets are more valuable than ever, and bad actors are growing ever more organized.

It’s not a question of whether you’ll be attacked but when. That means you don’t just need good security practices, but security done better than the most damaging cyberthreat making its way towards you.

We’re going to need a whole new approach to security at the corporate network boundary, and at Dalet we think the principle of Zero Trust is the best way forward.

Under a Zero Trust framework, nothing is considered safe. Every incoming signal or connection is by default untrustworthy until it’s rigorously tested through various security checks to ensure legitimacy or authority to connect.

Evolving Threats

The assets produced by the media sector have always been highly sensitive, subject to very strict public release dates or IP legislation. Think of the financial and market impact on a Hollywood studio when a blockbuster movie leaks online before it hits theaters or streaming premiere.

But here’s what’s changed. More of us are working remotely than ever due to a global pandemic, and the multiple platforms and devices we use to connect with workplaces only gives the bad guys more ways in.

These bad actors have changed too. Cybercrime is about organized data gathering rather than just underground bragging rights. They’re coordinated, efficient, and getting harder to stop at the border of your organization.

As an industry, we have to work hard to keep up and need to ensure that every input or connection request complies with internal security policies, that they’re running on reputable platforms or that authorized agents are using them. Otherwise every VPN, smartphone operating system, marketing platform account or video call client is a potential threat vector.

The Zero Trust Strategy

As the threat landscape transforms, so are we. Dalet has evolved from being a software vendor to a SaaS provider, and Zero Trust is the lynchpin that will allow us to do so safely.

Under a Zero Trust security framework, nothing is considered safe. As a new signal or connection comes in from outside your network or organization, it’s initially blocked by default. It’s then interrogated based on any possible data point you can program for – identity, location, the operating system or security profile of the device, the workload the input requests and more.

After scrutinizing every resource, any changes in configuration and network or traffic activity is continually logged, monitored and rigorously questioned for anything suspicious.

There’s also a continual standard of access based on least privilege. That means the user is given the minimum resources or access needed to do their job and no more. If they need it, any further access request is subject to the same interrogation.

Both device/access architecture and management have to evolve to adhere to Zero Trust principles, and that will involve training, awareness and the ushering in of a new security culture. Methods like password-less access and physical devices like security keys are going to become more important.

The Zero Trust Practice

Imagine an editor receives an email from her production manager or the VFX supervisor asking for access to a sensitive file and happily complies.

What she doesn’t know is that a specialized group has done the social engineering – figuring out who she is and a boss or senior company officer she’s likely to respond to. Another has done the corporate hacking into the company’s email server and sent the request from her boss’ email.

Another group has written the malware to install on the network when she emails the link or credentials back, and yet another harvests her networks for sensitive information it can hold to ransom.

In a traditional network – where the editor has sent the link using approved credentials – the server would simply grant access. Under a Zero Trust model, the device used by the hacker, its location and the workload usually performed after such a request aren’t known to the network even though the login credentials were cleared, so access is immediately blocked and the attempt logged.

But it’s about far more than stealing sensitive files. Imagine you’re a broadcaster streaming content that’s interrupted or taken down through a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack by a hacker group with a political or misinformation agenda. When online services combine live betting with real-time sport events, the liability alone could be crippling if your network or stream goes dark.

Evolving Vigilance

At Dalet, security has always been a cornerstone of everything we do. We consider it like the brakes of a car. You need to stay on the road and keep up the pace, and security isn’t there to block that but help achieve it by spotting dangers and letting you circumnavigate them quickly and efficiently.

My first act as CISO was to secure the company’s ISO/IEC 27001 certification, a testament not just to our experience and hard work securing clients in the past but our commitment to do so in the hyper-connected world of today and tomorrow.

Today, we’re extremely proud of our ISO/IEC 27001 and DPP Security Marks certifications, but we’re not by any means resting on our laurels, constantly developing an internal workflow called Secure Development Life Cycle (SDLC), which reduces the number of vulnerabilities in our systems.

Security needs a three-pronged approach;

People: We want our own people and customers to have awareness, to receive security training.

Processes: We want to constantly improve processes to better respond to incidents.

Technology: As technology has increasingly shifted from on premise to cloud and external systems and providers, security must remain the most critical part of the transition.

Following our heritage as an on-premises provider we have decades of experience monitoring systems, and as workflows using external platforms and multi-connectivity have evolved, we’ve grown up with it.

The Best in the World

Even more critically, the Media business is truly global, with suppliers and customers headquartered all over the world in countless different legal jurisdictions. And because data privacy law differs in each territory (most people are familiar with the EU’s 2016 General Data Protection Regulation or Europe’s GDPR), different users have different regulatory requirements.

But as well as evolving along with local standards and regulations wherever they are, we make a practice of applying the strictest regulatory frameworks we work with (including our own) and applying them everywhere our customers are found. Under my Dalet CISO remit, we will be implementing a Zero Trust approach to all our products and solutions, ensuring that every piece of data and content managed is well looked-after.

As a Dalet customer, we are sure you have better things to do than worry about security – that’s our job. So as you scale, remember that we’re growing with you, and Zero Trust is securing your borders no matter what cloud services, internet of things (IoT) or and bring your own device (BYOD) policies are used to interact with your organization.

You can’t take any risks with valuable media assets, but you have to expand your access rights to more players and collaborators than ever. Zero Trust provides the balance between the two you’re going to need in the near future.

Sometimes, it’s hard to picture the end product when facing a library of media assets. Dalet is instrumental in making your production concepts a reality; and one way we do this is designing our products to integrate with other trusted, reliable tools. One such group of solutions Dalet works alongside seamlessly is Adobe’s creative product lineup. Our products have only benefitted from the long-term partnership with the creators behind Audition, Photoshop, and Illustrator. To really understand the potential of this integration, let’s look at the relationship between Adobe Premiere Pro and Dalet Flex.

Working in the Field: Where the Adobe-Dalet Relationship Begins

In getting Adobe Premiere Pro and Dalet Flex to work together, our product team focused on two pain points:

  • Making remote work actually work
  • Facilitating project management

Dalet Flex offers editors a better way to manage projects by making the platform their central repository, not only for media files but also for the projects themselves. When integrated with Adobe Premiere Pro, the result is an efficient, cloud-based workflow optimized for collaboration and remote production.

Let’s take an example: your studio is working on a retrospective sports documentary. The workflow starts within Dalet Flex. Whether you have large libraries comprised of assets numbering into the millions, or simply a collection of content amassed over a year of production, Dalet Flex lets you build advanced data models and leverages controlled vocabularies, such as thesaurus or taxonomies, to make content easy to find. Free-text search strings can also be refined by going to the search results’ column headers, requesting specific parameters such as “Show me media shorter than five minutes.” or “Display content rated 3-stars by users.” By refining your content search, resulting media clips are reduced to only what you and your project will need.

Now having the specific media they want, users can gather them into a bin with a simple drag-and-drop as another layer of organization for your project. Dalet FlexMAM also allows you to clip and add to your bin only the exact portion required for your editing project.

With new clips borne from one asset or the assets you have collected in your various bins, a rough cut can be assembled using Dalet FlexMAM’s Sequence Editor. These sequences can serve as a starting point for a wide array of projects, easily imported into Adobe Premiere Pro. Additionally, users can open the Dalet FlexXTEND panel as an extension within Adobe Premiere Pro. This extension allows editors to browse the Dalet Flex library from within their creative environment, making all advanced search functions offered in FlexMAM also available in FlexXTEND.

Creating Content from Anywhere: Working in the Cloud

But what about when you are editing from a remote location or transitioning to a cloud-based operation? Let’s say that, for this sports retrospective production we are editing, I am working from home using Adobe Premiere Pro on my own workstation. Here, I will enable Proxy editing in FlexXTEND. When importing content from Dalet Flex, a proxy version is downloaded directly to my workstation. Now, I can edit remotely with proxy versions of the media assets. When the sequence is ready for rendering, FlexXTEND triggers the sequence rendering to a remote machine running Adobe Media Encoder.

High resolution media files can now remain close to the Media Encoder. Whether running on a cloud server or on-premises, Dalet Flex delivers maximum flexibility — no pun intended! — when it comes to where assets are stored and your Media Encoder machine is located.

In addition, Dalet Flex will soon add a custom MPEG-DASH reader to Adobe Premiere Pro so that editors can work inside Premiere Pro on growing files and enable workflows optimized for live content.

Project Management Matters More Than Ever!

We understand the importance of project management for creative teams. Dalet Flex now offers advanced features for rich asset and project management, which makes the life of Adobe editors easier in terms of collaboration and work efficiency. Dalet Flex effectively becomes the central repository not just for media files, but for Adobe Premiere Pro project files too. With this approach, projects are treated by Dalex Flex the same way as assets currently are. This offers a whole new world of possibilities to manage and collaborate on projects with the assignment of metadata, the ability to perform simple and complex search queries, and the access to all FlexMAM capabilities, be it directly in Dalet Flex or in Adobe Premiere Pro thanks to FlexXTEND.

How does this benefit video editors? Returning to the example of the retrospective sports documentary you are working on — let’s say you want to pull from another retrospective you put together in 2019. The FlexXTEND panel provides all of Dalet Flex’s search capabilities to find that project — assets and all — and import it back into Adobe Premiere Pro. The extra time and work required to return to a previous project and having to re-establish links to media files are no longer an issue with Dalet Flex integration. The solution now allows you to trigger workflows on Adobe Premiere Pro projects, for instance to restore media files from an archive when required. That is something of a real time saver.

Going further: What Is Coming Soon

What makes the integration of Dalet Flex and Adobe Premiere a must-have for content creators is that we are never satisfied with the status quo: always looking to improve, to innovate, and to ask, “What’s next?”

To keep improving collaboration and remote work, not only for editors but for all FlexMAM users, we will release brand new mobile applications for iOS and Android in upcoming months. We have much more planned, with increased Adobe Premiere Pro integration – this is merely the beginning. While this post has been focused on our integration with Adobe products, Dalet Flex also offers integrations with Avid environments. Stay tuned on this blog for more details in future posts.
