Dalet, a leading technology and service provider for media-rich organizations, today announced that Swiss broadcaster BNJ, which operates four radio stations and associated websites in the Jura Arc region, has chosen Dalet Galaxy five featuring AI-driven search and automated documentation powered by SaaS-based Dalet Media Cortex, as part of its comprehensive multi-year radio business diversification vision. The new modern media infrastructure, powered by Dalet, will provide the Jura Arc’s distinct communities who put increased importance on local news and programming, with significantly more stories and story angles as well as ways to “watch” and engage with favorite radio hosts and programs.

“BNJ is a leader in local news and program production with a deep connection to the Swiss communities it serves. A major part of our growth strategy is to fully embrace the potential of multimedia radio and new digital and social platforms,” states Pierre Steulet, CEO, BNJ. “The Dalet Galaxy five upgrade and AI capabilities of Dalet Media Cortex will enhance our ability to monetize assets through video sharing on social media channels, providing audiences increasingly personalized, curated news and programming content on the medium of their choice. With production, tracking and management of content automated, our journalists, DJs and partners can focus on engaging with their audiences in new ways.”

A Dalet customer since 1999, BNJ will use Dalet Galaxy five to connect its four radio sites (GRRIF, RJB, RTN, and RFJ), creating a centralized topology that enables modern digital-first workflows, archive enrichment, and content recommendations. New editorial, video and advertising production capabilities will allow BNJ to deliver hyper targeted and better curated news, talk shows, podcasts and music programming simultaneously across traditional, digital and social channels, and generate new advertising revenue through “sharable” visual radio.

“Watching radio is a big trend,” states Johann Zemmour, General Manager, EMEA & APAC, Dalet. “Audiences want to see and share popular or controversial clips. Advertisers want their ads at the start of the clip to guarantee exposure to viewers. Dalet’s Visual Radio capabilities brings audiences closer to DJs, journalists, and the stations themselves. It amplifies branding as well as boosting overall loyalty to the station. For localized radio where stations serve specific communities, it reinforces local and regional relevance – a key objective of the BNJ group.”

Dalet Galaxy five provides the workflow orchestration and editorial platform that is equally fluent with video and audio, and fully integrable with studio equipment and services. Video and audio clips can be edited, branded and captioned with lower thirds for immediate upload to social media platforms.

News with More Story Angles and Seamless Remote Production

Mobile and Craft editing tools, Dalet OneCut and Dalet On-the-Go, provide journalists the robustness and flexibility required to assemble long and short form programs and news content for all platforms from anywhere.

Cédric Richard, IT Manager at BNJ, explains the benefits the new AI capabilities will bring to the editorial workflow. “Dalet Media Cortex will automate the indexing and documentation of all new and archived content. Relevant content discovery and timely recommendations will help journalists quickly develop new and evolving story narratives, offering audiences a greater variety of local news and programming as well as more opportunities to engage with journalists on a story of interest.”

Advertising on the Fly and Integrated Music Production Workflows

Under Dalet API integration with the advertising systems BCE StudioTalk and Winpub from Solution Informatique, music, news and promotional content – with associated video – is instantly available for program curation or on the fly with granular control. Users will be able to adjust advertising screens and insert new adverts as relevant events unfold.

BNJ will also rely on Dalet APIs to integrate a wide range of systems and services, including MusicMaster for music programming and Lawo for playout. The unified workflow will streamline processes, offering a smoother experience for DJs, journalists, promoters and audiences alike.

A robust, highly scalable solution that supports rapid media business expansion, Dalet Galaxy five can be deployed on-premises, in the cloud or in a hybrid configuration. To learn more about Dalet solutions for Radio, please visit https://www.dalet.com/solutions/radio-stations/.

Dalet, a leading technology and service provider for media-rich organizations, today announced that Brussels-based BX1, has expanded its multimedia channel and content operations with the flagship Dalet Galaxy five platform. BX1, which began as a weekly local community show that aired on Belgium’s public service broadcaster RTBF in 1985, is the leading channel for Brussels-Capital Region’s French speaking community. The organization recently completed its transformation into a multimedia powerhouse offering its highly engaged audiences programs across television, radio, digital and social media. The agile production and distribution infrastructure, which is underpinned by Dalet Galaxy five, enables BX1 to prepare and deliver local news, politics, business, culture, fashion, music and sports content from a single media technology platform.

BX1 and Dalet started their collaboration in 2015. This led to the installation of Dalet News Pack the same year, a lighter-weight, packaged Dalet Galaxy five solution, allowing journalists to share media and collaborate on news stories. In 2020, the system was upgraded with the full deployment of Dalet Galaxy five with Dalet Xtend for Adobe® Premiere® Pro editing, offering all of the production and distribution capabilities that the Dalet’s Unified News Operations solution has to offer.

Cédric van Uytvanck, Technical Director since 2014, recalls: “The original objective was to professionalize BX1, and that would not have been possible without the right tools. It needed to quit the historical homemade method used by the channel. It had grown from ten to 60 employees without changing methods or the technical tools, so it was not up to date. Today, about 40 employees are working simultaneously with the Dalet solution every day.”

At first, BX1 was solely a TV station, operated by only five employees. The content struck a nerve with the local community and the station gained a loyal following, growing quickly. As BX1 matured, the audience wanted increased and better coverage, and that meant that the station needed a step change in technology and workflow. The original ad-hoc production techniques, which involved rundown management on spreadsheets, video editing on workstations unconnected to the newsroom and without a management system, were no longer viable.

Cédric explains the trajectory, “In 2020, we launched the radio station, which proved to us that choosing Dalet – and being ambitious with our technology investments – was the right strategy.”

Live output increased to seven hours per day and the lunch hour radio broadcast – now with video – was extended from 30 mins to 1h 30 mins, doubling the audience. Visual radio production is similar to TV production itself, with a more informal feel – almost like a “behind the scenes” video, and the format has proven popular with the listeners and viewers.

Cédric concludes: “We would never have been able to develop BX1 in the way we did if we had not been so ambitious for a small organization. By choosing Dalet, we avoided the mistake of buying a system that could only handle TV. We are equally fluent now in TV, radio, visual radio and podcast, as well as digital and social media with key integrations such as Adobe Premiere Pro that enable us to have a robust editorial workflow. And Dalet is right at the centre of our operations as we expand into the future.”

In addition to using Adobe Premiere Pro for advanced editing, BX1 uses the complementary Dalet OneCut editing tool for fast program turnarounds such as breaking news.

“BX1 is a great example of how Dalet’s built-in flexibility can help smaller media organizations grow without overreaching their financial or human resources,” says Dalet’s General Manager for EMEA & APAC, Johann Zemmour. “All BX1’s journalists now move effortlessly between TV, studio work, radio and digital – a perfect example of Dalet Unified News Operations. Not only can they work across multiple digital distribution formats, but can spread across multiple physical sites. The full commercial and audience engagement potential for visual radio is realized with the new upgrade. We’re proud of our part in bringing this ambitious media organization’s vision into an everyday reality.”

Dalet, a leading provider of solutions and services for media organizations and content professionals, today announced that Israeli national radio network Galei Tsahal (Galatz) is upgrading to the Dalet Galaxy five Media Asset Management (MAM) and Workflow Orchestration platform to enable workflows that better serve its audience with greater access to content across its digital channels and social networks. A leading music radio station that sets the tone and playlist for the country, Galatz is also known for its news and thematic programs featuring politicians, military leaders, and influential citizens. A Dalet customer since 2006, Galatz undertook the upgrade to enhance production and delivery of its music and news-related content through social media networks, enhance its reporters’ abilities to file stories from the field using Dalet On-the-Go, and use AI-powered speech-to-text algorithms to enable wider accessibility to its rich historical archives, which date back to its founding in 1950.

“The upgrade to Dalet Galaxy five is enabling us to build a new content value chain, better integrating our social media channels across our operations, and leveraging AI services to make our entire inventory more discoverable and better monetized,” states Izak Pasternak, head of the technical department, Galatz. “We are able to make this quantum leap forward with the confidence of a decade-long partnership that is embedded in collaboration and success.”

Amplifying audience engagement

With Dalet Galaxy five, Galatz will be able to make all content that is produced in the production system available to social media publishing with a click of a button. Social media content performance (views, likes, shares) will be analyzed by the broadcaster; that data will be used to make better-informed decisions as to what to provide audiences next, helping to deliver a more enjoyable experience to listeners. Because the system is fully integrated with social channels, Galatz will be able to easily tap into the newly indexed archives and distribute topical collections of historical content across social networks – something that they have not been able to do before.

Izak explains, “In terms of social media, today there is no connection between the system that is broadcasting content and the social media channels we want to publish to. With more and more people consuming news and content through social networks, it’s imperative for us to move to an integrated platform that can help us engage with audiences on a whole new level. Dalet Galaxy five enables us to do just that.”

Reporting from the field

Connecting in-the-field reporters directly to the newsroom, Dalet On-the-Go lets journalists organize and submit comprehensive news packages from their mobile device. Users can record interviews, write stories, and assemble and upload packages to the Dalet Galaxy five content catalog for sharing across the station or sending direct to air.

AI opens the archives

With a vast amount of valuable historic information under its care, Galatz wanted to make its archives open to the public for the first time online. Leveraging Dalet Media Cortex, the new AI cloud service of Dalet Galaxy five, the network applied AI-driven, speech-to-text algorithms to all archived content, turning it into text that is both searchable and accessible via an online portal.

“Until now our content producers had to manually add metadata into the media asset management system, then an archivist would review it to make sure it was filled in properly,” explains Izak. “If our archives team wanted to find something, they had to remember how it might be catalogued and in which categories. Going back into the archive to transcribe it all manually would have been cost-prohibitive.” Izak continues, “Now, with Dalet Media Cortex everything is searchable since it’s processed through the speech-to-text engine. This saves us significant resource time and effort. And what’s more important, Israeli citizens can sit at home and enjoy the archive, simply by searching online. Dalet Media Cortex has made it extremely easy to search and find content from any point in time since 1950, which to a large degree, is the history of Israel itself.”

Dalet’s Johann Zemmour, general manager of Dalet EMEA and APAC concludes, “Dalet is proven time and time again as a trusted technical partner to help customers achieve successful business transformations. In this case for Galatz, Dalet’s forward-thinking development of AI tools within Dalet Media Cortex enables the network to expand the use of its archives by making an extremely large amount of content available and searchable to its citizens. That could not have been realistically achieved by any other means.” Zemmour concludes, “Galatz recognizes the importance of providing its audience with experiences on the platforms of their choice and worked closely with Dalet to deliver on that demand.”

What’s New for Dalet at BroadcastAsia2017

New features and solutions shown at BroadcastAsia2017 include: the Dalet Orchestration Solution, winner of the NewBay Best of Show Award presented by TV Technology at NAB; a new range of options for cost-effective Business Continuity; a full suite of tools and data models to manage IMF packages at scale; and enhancements to post-production workflows enabling seamless integration with Adobe Creative Cloud and especially Adobe Premiere CC.

Dalet Orchestration is an enterprise, media supply chain orchestration solution that integrates content pools and automates workflows across different verticals (programs, promos, news, sport, lifestyle, etc.), providing a consolidated view of media assets across the business, and enabling easy and efficient distribution of content by the various broadcasting and publishing systems. Delivered with Dalet Report Center, the solution offers business intelligence specifically tailored for media operations in order to measure performance throughout the chain and build sound data-driven strategies.

Dalet Business Continuity offers a range of solutions, based on a secondary site, which can be hosted in an environment of the customer’s choice including on-premise, hosted in a private cloud, or in a public cloud such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Microsoft Azure. The secondary site provides access to back-up content (video, audio, scripts, rundowns, etc.) replicated from the primary platform – from a few hours up to days or weeks of content, depending on capacity and replication policies. Available within minutes, all operation-critical workflows defined by the customer’s contingency plan will be switched on. The pay-as-you-go and on-demand infrastructure models of the cloud require minimal upfront investment compared to classic plans that require large capital investment.

To manage and package IMF content at scale, the need for a powerful media asset management (MAM) with integrated Workflow Engine such as Dalet Galaxy becomes critical. The enhanced Dalet Galaxy platform offers a sophisticated set of tools to manage mass IMF packaging at the production, distribution and contribution points of a media business. The comprehensive workflow covers the full range of services for IMF package creation, from importing IMF packages natively into the MAM, to visualizing IMF structures and components with Dalet Context Maps, to building versions and supplemental packages with Dalet Track Stack and Version Editor, and eventually wrapping the compositions for distribution using a connector to an IMF-compliant transcode farm such as Dalet AmberFin.

The recently updated HTML-5 Dalet Xtend panel connects Adobe® Premiere Pro® CC users to the Dalet Galaxy MAM, providing a direct gateway to metadata-rich assets and facilitating collaboration with users such as journalists, prep editors, sports producers and other production personnel on the Dalet Galaxy platform. New features and capabilities include support for multi-sequence export, locator inheritance, configurable metadata forms for exporting content, and support for the ‘while’ scenarios when exporting from Adobe Premiere Pro.

Dalet will be presenting the evolutions of its range of solutions at NAB 2017, from April 24th through April 27th, on booth SL6210. Based on the Dalet Galaxy orchestration and asset management platform, these solutions help streamline a variety of workflows including: Programs & Promos management, Multi-Platform distribution, Unified News Operations, Sports highlights & magazines, Post-Production and Multimedia radio.

Dalet will reveal a number of new features and functional enhancements, including: the launch of a new range of options for cost-effective business continuity, a full suite of tools and data model to manage IMF packages at scale, and enhancements to social media publication tools.

“As audiences keep demanding more content and shifting on which platform they want to consume it, content producers and distributors need to be able to continuously realign strategies and adapt. This directly calls for their operations to become fully agile. The Dalet Galaxy platform offers the perfect foundation for this transition, combining a mature and proven Workflow Engine technology, the industry leading MAM capabilities, a comprehensive set of powerful user tools, and a wide ecosystem of connected partner technologies.” states Arnaud Elnecave, Vice President of Marketing at Dalet. “The new Dalet tools shown at NAB answer critical business needs, simplify the user experience, and invigorate operations across the board, from ensuring business continuity via a secure virtualized or cloud-based infrastructure, to efficient bidirectional integration with social platforms, or simplifying a complex need like mass management of IMF packages.”

Attendees at the NAB 2017 exhibition can book a private meeting to discuss any of the following technology innovations shown at NAB:

  • Business Continuity: For existing Dalet customers, Dalet introduces a new range of options for affordable business continuity. These solutions tap into a combination of innovative features for replication and failover, as well as virtualization and cloud to reduce the cost of infrastructure of the disaster recovery site.
  • Social Media: Efficient data-driven operations become critical. Social platforms offer a wealth of data about audiences that, when aggregated and made available at various levels of the media organization, allow more informed decision making whether it is for immediate editorial directions or longer-term strategic planning. Enhancements to the Dalet Galaxy platform make publishing to social channels easier and more intuitive, while keeping track of the outbound assets and pulling back all relevant data.
  • Managing IMF at Scale: With these latest enhancements, Dalet Galaxy offers the right data model and set of tools to manage IMF packages in typical workflows including ingest of IMF, mapping of content, preview, packaging and distribution.

Orchestrating Workflows Across the Media Enterprise

Central to most implementations, the Dalet Workflow Engine gives facilities all the agility and flexibility they need to build consistent, efficient and agile supply chains that connect all contributing siloes across the enterprise.

The engine orchestrates and automates a combination of user tasks and media services such as ingest, logging, editing, transcoding, QC, media packaging and distribution. The user-friendly Workflow Designer interface lets administrators intuitively model business processes by simply drag-and-dropping from a palette of stencils that span user tasks & notifications, media and metadata services, gateways, timeout and error management, and much more. This greatly simplifies preparing and delivering packages that require multiple languages, multiple graphic assets, multiple audio tracks, multiple subtitle tracks, and different delivery formats. Combined with Dalet Galaxy API, this provides an open framework that connects over 90 industry-leading vendors from storage & infrastructure technologies, to media services and post-production applications, to traffic and business platforms.

Unified News Operations

Dalet Unified News Operations is an agile and scalable solution that combines all the essential functions for the efficient modern newsroom. Based on the Dalet Galaxy platform, it offers a comprehensive suite of collaborative tools that help streamline the entire chain of operations from planning to ingest, logging, editing, graphics, show scheduling, studio automation, multi-platform distribution, and social platforms direct integration. The Dalet Workflow Engine allows users to design and orchestrate distribution workflows that require complex media packaging and automated distribution profiles.

Multimedia Radio

The new Dalet Galaxy-based Radio platform directly addresses the radio broadcast market’s growing demand for solutions that help reach beyond the span of their transmitters to deliver the next generation radio experience. The comprehensive solution combines traditional robust and proven applications such as Dalet OnAir automation and Dalet Galaxy asset manager with latest generation tools for multimedia production and multi-platform distribution such as Dalet OneCut multitrack desktop editor, automated distribution to digital and social platforms, and connectors to new partner technologies such as multi-camera visual radio production including graphics.

Dalet, a leading provider of software-based solutions for media organizations, has announced that Australia’s Special Broadcasting Service Corporation (SBS) is centralizing its media operations on the Dalet Galaxy Media Asset Management (MAM) platform. The vision will provide a unified infrastructure to facilitate greater content collaboration across all SBS departments, and orchestrate the program acquisition, preparation and distribution workflows under a single system.

Noel Leslie, Chief Technology Officer for SBS said, “SBS made a strategic decision to bring our programming content under the management of a single MAM platform. The integrated solution consolidates a number of our existing systems, unifying assets. This will allow for greater collaboration across SBS, and make it easier for us to store, access and share our content, enabling us to do what we do best – telling important diverse stories. We were also looking for a more cost-efficient approach to preparation and distribution that will positively benefit the financial bottom line. We chose to work with Dalet to achieve this in what we are confident will be the beginning of a long term partnership.”

In total, SBS will implement dozens of different workflows and seamlessly integrate 10 different systems with Dalet. The new streamlined architecture will bring SBS’s vast archives into the production workflow and provide embedded tools to conduct program preparation as well as emerging “new media” workflows from a single system. Thanks to the new Dalet Workflow Engine, task-based and complex processes such as assignments, escalation protocols and error management can be fully automated, orchestrating content flow from the moment it is received to its final destination in multiple languages and formats, with metadata intact. Key features like Dalet Work Orders track the progress of the work order in its entirety and provide employees access to real-time status data that serves both SBS technical and business decision needs.

“The sheer power and extensibility of the Dalet Galaxy MAM enterprise class platform to address multiple integrations and automate for media organizations is the key to SBS’s decision to work with us on this significant project,” said Raoul Cospen, General Manager, Dalet Singapore. “Using the Dalet Galaxy platform, SBS was able to unify its infrastructure and now, with fewer components to juggle, decrease training efforts. This has the immediate effect of lowering total cost of ownership and ensuring that the return on investment has increased.”

The Dalet Galaxy MAM will take over program management and multi-platform publishing with Ingest, QC and Playout provided by Deluxe Australia as part of their managed services agreement with SBS. Dalet will also integrate with IBMS sales and traffic software from SintecMedia, Adobe Premiere NLEs for craft editing, Front Porch Diva for archive and other in-house systems to provide SBS teams with a single user interface to easily access and manage content.

Dalet, a leading developer of Media Asset Management (MAM) solutions, software and services for content producers, has announced that Al Rayyan Radio has selected Dalet Radio Suite powered by the Dalet Galaxy platform to transform its operational efficiency. The new installation forms part of a comprehensive station upgrade and includes Dalet On-Air playout, up to 10 edit suites, and the versatile audio editor Dalet OneCut.

Al Rayyan Radio, part of Al Rayyan Satellite Channel operated by Al Rayyan Media and Marketing based in Doha, Qatar, broadcasts two national channels of entertainment, music and cultural content. Regional systems integrator Media Group International (MGI) was commissioned to lead a major upgrade and approached Dalet to automate, streamline and unify all of Al Rayyan Radio’s media acquisition, production and delivery under a single advanced MAM platform.

“MGI was commissioned to handle the upgrade on the basis of its technical expertise and thorough knowledge of the technical systems Al Rayyan Radio wanted to implement,” explained Mohamed Makki Ibrahim, Business Development Manager at MGI. “The project involved installing a new two-channel control room, studio DJ room and edit room. A priority for Al Rayyan Radio was for the new systems to deliver on a far more efficient workflow than previously had. Dalet Radio Suite was our first choice to fully automate each channel’s media lifecycle from ingest and scheduling to editing and playout.”

Jamal Al Jaber, General Manager, Al Rayyan Radio, said, “We embarked on this major upgrade in order to achieve greater day-to-day efficiency and to maintain and enhance the quality of our output for our audience. At the same time we did not want to go off-air for a second. We knew that MGI and Dalet were the right partners to help us achieve this business transformation. The complete system, including the Dalet Radio Suite, has streamlined every aspect of our digital production chain enabling us to meet our objectives.”

For this turnkey solution, MGI also demolished and rebuilt the acoustic system and completely renovated the interior of Al Rayyan Radio’s building.

Michael Meisel, Area Sales Manager of the Middle East at Dalet, commented on the complexity of the installation. “It was a complicated upgrade because Al Rayyan Radio’s existing system stayed on-air throughout the build, so the migration of databases to the new system had to take place with zero downtime.”

Dalet Radio Suite’s centralized MAM content catalog seamlessly manages all programs and associated data. Combined with modular, task-specific tools, Dalet Radio Suite meets the comprehensive demands of large-scale newsrooms as well as the needs of multichannel music networks.

Dalet OneCut is an advanced audio editor that smoothly includes effects and supports multiple HD formats. The Dalet Dashboard helps administrators by monitoring the ongoing health and performance of their system.

Dalet On-Air is a proven and highly reliable automated solution used in some of the world’s largest multichannel operations.

Dalet, a leading developer of Media Asset Management (MAM) solutions, software and services for content producers, has announced that KEXP has selected Dalet Radio Suite, powered by the Dalet Galaxy platform, to modernize and digitize its operations.

KEXP is a Seattle, Washington, based radio station and arts organization renowned for featuring breaking new artists. KEXP approached Dalet to unify all of its media acquisition, production and delivery under a single advanced MAM platform with extensible and rich collaborative production and metadata tools to curate a continuously growing catalog of exclusive performances and music libraries. The Dalet solution will transform KEXP’s ability to create, manage and distribute a full range of live, recorded and on-demand audio and video content to enhance its brand’s reach across traditional and new media platforms.

“At KEXP we pride ourselves on being one of the few radio stations tightly connected with artists,” says Kevin Cole, Senior Programming Director. “We champion breakout bands not supported by commercial media outlets. Our mission is to help our audience of passionate and intelligent music fans discover and explore the best new music across all music genres.”

“KEXP has leveraged open source music metadata repository MusicBrainz to build a metadata schema that allows us to capture detailed information about each artist, recording, genre and more,” says Chief Engineer Jamie Alls. “It enables us to store, index, search, distribute, re-distribute or associate with other content. All of this rich information will contribute to building a unique library that will serve the organization for many years to come. The decision to invest in Dalet is driven by our understanding of its ability to manage this entire process while working with external systems like MusicBrainz.”

KEXP’s 43 DJs are widely recognized as experts in their field, presenting the newest emerging popular artists alongside established bands. Artists championed by the station include Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, Nirvana and Soundgarden. KEXP’s varied programming mix includes a real-time on-demand playlist, a two-week archive of radio shows and an array of podcasts.

KEXP also features in-studio performances and interviews transmitted live on air or pre-recorded, edited and then broadcast or made available on-demand. The Dalet installation lays the groundwork for the station to better leverage social media platforms for trends and analytics for on-air talent and programming to produce audience-driven playlists.

“KEXP is a true visionary,” says Frederic Roux, Director of Sales, USA & Canada, Dalet. “Its approach to transforming a radio station into a true multimedia production with connected audiences is a major leap forward. We are very proud to be part of this high-profile project and help deliver the technical foundation that will allow KEXP to shape the next generation of its operations and content distribution.”

Roux continues, “Dalet Galaxy is an open and scalable platform built on a flexible workflow engine and central repository. It orchestrates any complex combination of automated processes and human tasks, taking away the complexity of technical operations to allow a focus on the user experience and business process, increasing productivity, quality and reach.”

Dalet Galaxy is a production, playout and distribution system designed for media convergence, underpinned by the powerful workflow engine of the Galaxy platform. The integration at KEXP provides a complete digital environment, enabling smooth integration with a number of key third-party applications. All pre-recorded programs and audio/video content production for commercials, station promos or jingles will be created using Adobe® Audition® or Avid® ProTools®. Audition and ProTools users will push files and associate metadata to the Galaxy central repository where it will be indexed, stored and synchronized with the MusicBrainz database.

About KEXP

KEXP is one of the most influential listener-supported non-profit music media organizations in North America. More than 200,000 listeners from around the world tune in to the station each week over the air and online. On KEXP’s YouTube channel, videos of exclusive in-studio performances garner more than 1.7 million views per week. KEXP produces over 500 live performances each year. Dalet, a leading developer of Media Asset Management (MAM) solutions, software, and services for content producers, announced that VRT, the Flemish-language national broadcaster in Belgium, has chosen Dalet Radio Suite to modernize the existing production systems for Radio 2 and its five regional stations. When completed, the upgrade will provide advanced production and playout capabilities with highly redundant IT-based centralized storage, servers, and database. The selection of Dalet Radio Suite was made after a rigorous tender process that included a comprehensive proof of concept and on-site evaluations of shortlisted systems. The Radio 2 project is the first project call-off under a four-year framework contract.

The Dalet Radio Suite installation for Radio 2 will include more than 200 Dalet production workstations and 33 Dalet On-air workstations in the broadcast studios. Dalet Radio Suite maintains a centralized MAM content catalogue that seamlessly manages all programs and associated data while modular task-specific desktop tools streamline production and distribution. Content repurposing and delivery can be accomplished very efficiently, as the Dalet workflow engine automates many processes in the background to facilitate distribution—from on-the-fly delivery of Program Associated Data (PAD) for DAB, DRM, or HD Radio to transcoding for podcasts or for online or mobile uses.

VRT has also acquired a corporate license for the Dalet OneCut editor, a feature-rich multi-track audio editor. Dalet OneCut can be a standalone application on any desktop with the benefit of connecting to the Dalet system to access or upload content. The Dalet system will integrate with the Avid iNews system at VRT, allowing scripts and rundowns to be easily accessed and archived by Dalet together with audio clips. Production across the regional sites will be centralized; editing work performed at the sites will be sent directly to the central site in Brussels. At the Brussels broadcasting center, Dalet will handle broadcast scheduling and automated playout for the regional splits.

“This upgrade will advance our radio operations into the next generation. Dalet Radio Suite gives us the flexibility in terms of infrastructure, metadata and workflow management along with the level of reliability and redundancy we require,” says Bart Lamberigts, Project Leader at VRT. “For instance, our regional sites will connect to Brussels for production, but Dalet cache servers in each region will ensure that playout is immune to any network problem that might occur. If the regional site is disconnected from Brussels, regional users can connect to their local Dalet server to continue producing music and news. On the functionality side, our users particularly liked the Dalet OneCut audio editor with its high levels of functionality and ease of use. Thanks to the corporate license for OneCut, every desktop can be an editing location. This will reduce our need to support all other kinds of audio editing platforms while providing the high level of features we need.”

“The VRT tender process was extremely thorough and efficient, and Dalet is very gratified to have been awarded this important opportunity,” says Chris Wright, Dalet UK General Manager. “Beyond the very detailed proof of concept, the on-site evaluation by end-users provided first-hand feedback on how the various features can be used to improve the workflow. The importance of having functionality mesh with workflow expectations can’t be overstated. Dalet Radio Suite measured up to VRT’s high standards.”

The Dalet Professional Services team will act as functional integrator for the project providing workflow analysis and specifications, installation and configuration, testing of workflows and integrations, training, and 24/7 support services. The first stage of the project is already underway with the installation of the Dalet OneCut audio editor on standalone workstations. Full system implementation is expected in early 2013.

Dalet is showcasing Dalet Galaxy, the latest and most advanced version of the company’s enterprise Media Asset Management (MAM) platform at the IBC Exhibition in Amsterdam, September 7-11, 2012 (Stand 8B.77). Dalet Galaxy includes a BPMN 2.0-compliant workflow engine that has been specially tailored to media workflows in order to improve productivity while adding operational and business visibility across the enterprise.

Additional new features in Dalet Galaxy include Dalet OneCut, a multitrack video editing framework; a modern graphical user interface; more customizable data models; advanced tools for searching and indexing; increased interoperability with NLEs; and support for upcoming industry standards such as AS-02 and FIMS. Dalet Galaxy will become the foundation for the company’s enterprise MAM solutions, which include the purpose-built workgroup packages: Dalet Media Life for program prep and archiving, Dalet News Suite for news production and distribution, Dalet Sports Factory for live event and sports production, and Dalet Radio Suite for multiplatform news and music programming.

The new, industry-standard BPM workflow engine in Dalet Galaxy meets the specific workflow needs of broadcasters and media companies and makes all of the operational and business processes fully visible. Managers can see the workflow in total as well as at the granular level. They can monitor the internal progress of each workflow step and pinpoint the status of assets in the workflow so priorities and tasks can be adjusted and reassigned to ensure that deadlines are met. The BPM workflow engine includes easy-to-use tools for designing and modeling workflows, and for orchestrating human tasks as well as automated processes (transcoding, file transfers, etc.). It’s also possible to create contextual “To Do” lists, which simplify the workflow for operators and ensure compliance to established procedures.

More Highlights of Dalet Galaxy

Advanced Media Asset Management Platform unifies diverse systems to provide an end-to-end, cross-system metadata, content and workflow management solution.

  • Integrated, single database solution with centralized, multimedia content catalogue with highly customizable data model
  • Enterprise search engine for indexing and searching for fast, easy content sharing and repurposing
  • Built-in tools for key operational tasks (ingest, production, distribution, etc.)
  • Highly scalable, based on open standards in broadcast and IT
  • Integration tools (Web Services APIs, MXF, XML, etc.) for building a cross-system, end-to-end solution linking together traffic, graphics, post-production, automation and archive

BPM-Compliant Workflow Engine – Added to Dalet MAM core and adapted for media businesses, this powerful, non-proprietary workflow engine follows the BPMN 2.0 Business Process Management standard.

  • Adds visibility to your enterprise by exposing operational processes/workflows to business layer
  • Greater clarity in the process chain adds value to the business enterprise
  • Improves agility to react to industry and competitive shifts
  • Orchestrates and automates IT processes and human tasks for greater productivity and efficiency

Design Tool for Modeling Workflows allows you to graphically design your workflows.

  • Visual modeling based on BPMN 2.0 standardized notation helps define roles, responsibilities and processes. Precise, graphical representation helps identify and correct gaps, redundancies and inefficiencies

Real-time Data for Business Reporting

  • Audit trails improve accountability with easily traceable paths for key actions in production chain
  • Accessible in customized reports or available as raw data for complex analysis
  • Data can be used to build Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for ongoing Business Activity Monitoring

Contextual To Do Lists streamline the workflow and ensure compliance with established procedures. Tasks are prioritized and assigned to individual users or user groups. When operators accept a task, the tools needed to complete the task (video editor, metadata form, etc.) automatically open on the user’s desktop. There is no doubt about which tool to use, what asset to work on or how to proceed as user prompts drive the task to completion.

The New Graphical User Interface is completely updated to meet modern usability standards and will provide a consistent look across all applications. The GUI also features different “skins.” Either a light or dark background can be applied to particular functions or workgroups in order to make the desktop tools easier to see and navigate. For instance, the dark background might be applied for technical operators who perform tasks in low-light environments such as gallery control rooms, while the light background might be more beneficial for users focused on text, metadata entry, indexing and logging.

Dalet OneCut is a real-time, multitrack video and audio editing platform. Dalet OneCut is the ideal tool for multimedia journalists and content prep operators. The system can be configured to match the complexity of different tasks and the proficiency of the users. Clips can be stored in the Dalet Clip Bin where they can be shared, assembled and storyboarded.

Dalet Xtend for Avid NLEs and Adobe PremiereDalet Xtend provides for seamless exchanges of videos, shot lists, EDLs and their metadata between NLEs and the Dalet MAM and is now available for Avid Media Composer and Avid NewsCutter in addition to Apple Final Cut Pro. The module will shortly be available for Adobe Premiere editing systems.

Enterprise Search and Cataloguing – including glossary, thesaurus and genealogy for faster searching and content sharing.

Dalet WebSpace and Google Gadgets – Dalet Galaxy now makes content and tools even more accessible. With Web Space, authorized local and remote users can share content and access Dalet toolsets via a standard web browser. It is also possible to expose content and tools such as Dalet Preview, Media Logger and Storyboarder directly onto customer portals using Google gadget technology.

Media Life is designed to integrate with third-party systems such as NLEs, automation devices, archives and business systems. Media Life is an open platform with a variety of data exchange and integration paths, including using SOA-compliant tools such as Web Services APIs.

With fully integrated desktop scripting, video, graphic and multimedia tools, journalists are engaged in a smooth and intuitive workflow that allows them to concentrate on producing high-quality content for broadcast and new media outlets. Content and metadata are enriched at every step — from ingest through automated playout, archives and multiplatform delivery. Dalet News Suite facilitates story-centric production and fosters collaboration between different departments — from the news desk, planning and production to the control room and new media units. The Dalet MAM platform tracks it all, and the workflow engine automates many background tasks. With full media and metadata tracking, the MAM platform provides a robust framework for managing assets and leveraging content to take advantage of new business opportunities.

Dalet Sports Factory – Sports production tools with built-in MAM

Dalet Sports Factory offers fast sports production tools, fully integrated within an enterprise MAM platform. Sports Factory’s highlights and replay components cover logging, play-by-play highlights and playback, and instant replay with multiple camera angles and slow motion. Media are logged once and immediately available for use in programs and packages. Unlike typical sports production products, Dalet Sports Factory integrates production archives and media management, ensuring all enriched media assets are at your fingertips during and after the game. Designed on the open Dalet MAM platform, Sports Factory integrates with industry-standard NLEs and other broadcast and sports production systems to provide a cohesive, fluid workflow.

Dalet today unveiled plans for Dalet Galaxy, the latest and most advanced version of the company’s enterprise Media Asset Management (MAM) platform. Born from a decade of experience in building MAM solutions for our broadcast and media customers, Dalet Galaxy includes a high-value, BPMN 2.0-compliant workflow engine that dramatically boosts productivity and agility while also improving operational and business visibility across the media enterprise.

The release will offer many additional features including a new modern-looking graphical user interface; Dalet OneCut, a built-in, multitrack video editing framework; more customizable data models; advanced tools for searching and indexing; increased interoperability with NLEs; and support for upcoming industry standards such as AS-02 and FIMS. Dalet Galaxy will become the foundation for the company’s enterprise MAM solutions, which include the purpose-built workgroup packages Dalet Media Life for program prep and archiving, Dalet News Suite for news production and distribution, Dalet Sports Factory for live event and sports production, and Dalet Radio Suite for multiplatform news and music programming. Dalet Galaxy and the portfolio of Dalet solutions can be previewed during NAB 2012 in Las Vegas, April 16-19, 2012, at the Dalet booth (SL4615).

“Dalet Galaxy takes our Dalet Enterprise Edition MAM platform to the next level and will offer many benefits to our customers. With Dalet Galaxy, we’ve incorporated an advanced, industry-standard Business Process Management workflow engine into our core MAM product and tailored it to meet the needs of broadcast and media companies. Dalet Galaxy adds important new dimensions to the MAM, making it the first open and fully integrated platform for managing media and workflows in a convergent world. With the capability to manipulate any type of digital object, including video, audio, text, and graphics, the possibilities are endless,” says Stephane Schlayen, Chief Operating Officer, Dalet. “All the operational and business processes are now fully visible and monitored across the enterprise, in real-time. Advanced reporting capabilities provide the means to improve efficiencies and workflows based on actual metrics coming from the system. Customers can control their processes at all levels — horizontally and vertically. This kind of insight and agility will be increasingly important in our fast-changing business environment.”

The new BPM workflow engine in Dalet Galaxy includes tools for designing and modeling workflows, and for orchestrating human tasks as well as automated processes (transcoding, file transfers, etc.). This comes with contextual “To Do” list capability, which adds even greater productivity to the workflow and transparency to the operators. Managers can prioritize and re-assign tasks and make sure deadlines are met.

“This breakthrough technology goes well beyond automation. With BPM, you can see the totality of the workflow, and at the same time, you can identify the internal progress of each workflow step at a granular level — see where assets are in the workflow, check statuses, change priorities and pinpoint bottlenecks. Other business sectors have already benefited greatly from BPM, and now we are bringing the same potential to the broadcast and media industry,” explains Kevin Savina, Director of Product Management, Dalet. “There will also be many new and significant workflow enhancements in Dalet Galaxy, such as the new user interface and Dalet OneCut, our fully integrated multitrack video editor. We’ve also expanded capabilities for video and metadata exchanges between our MAM and leading NLEs; the Dalet Xtend module, which already supported Apple Final Cut Pro, now supports Avid NLEs and will soon support Adobe Premiere. From start to finish and in many different ways, Dalet Galaxy will truly make your business smarter and more efficient.”

Powered with several key new features and applications, including a new graphical user interface and Dalet OneCut fully integrated video editor. Dalet Galaxy will be available later this year.

Highlights of Dalet Galaxy

Advanced Media Asset Management Platform unifies diverse systems to provide an end-to-end, cross-system metadata, content and workflow management solution. Including: Integrated, single database solution with centralized, multimedia content catalogue with highly customizable data model, Enterprise search engine for indexing and searching for fast, easy content sharing and repurposing, Built-in tools for key operational tasks (ingest, production, distribution, etc.), Highly scalable, based on open standards in broadcast and IT, and Integration tools (Web Services APIs, MXF, XML, etc.) for building a cross-system, end-to-end solution linking together traffic, graphics, post-production, automation and archive.

Workflow Engine – Added to Dalet MAM core and adapted for media businesses, this powerful, non-proprietary workflow engine follows the BPMN 2.0 Business Process Management standard. The Workflow Engine adds visibility to your enterprise by exposing operational processes/workflows to business layer, gives greater clarity in the process chain adds value to the business enterprise, improves agility to react to industry and competitive shifts, and orchestrates and automates IT processes and human tasks for greater productivity and efficiency.

Design Tool for Modeling Workflows allows you to graphically design your workflows – Visual modeling based on BPMN 2.0 standardized notation helps define roles, responsibilities and processes. Precise, graphical representation helps identify and correct gaps, redundancies and inefficiencies.

Real-time Data for Business Reporting – Audit trails improve accountability with easily traceable paths for key actions in production chain, Accessible in customized reports or available as raw data for complex analysis, Data can be used to build Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for ongoing Business Activity Monitoring.

Dalet Xtend for Avid NLEs and Adobe Premiere – This module provides for seamless exchanges of videos, shot lists, EDLs and their metadata between NLEs and the Dalet MAM and is now available for Avid Media Composer and Avid NewsCutter in addition to Apple Final Cut Pro. The module will shortly be available for Adobe Premiere editing systems.

Enterprise Search and cataloguing including glossary, thesaurus and genealogy for faster searching and content sharing.

Dalet, a leading developer of Media Asset Management (MAM) solutions, software and services for broadcasters announced today the initial deployment of Dalet’s advanced Media Asset Management platform and specialized video and audio solutions at the recently opened Astana Media Center (AMC) in Kazakhstan. Four Dalet Enterprise Edition systems will provide the operational MAM backbone for the center’s many workflows including: production / program preparation for long form and episodic TV series for broadcast; the country’s National Media Archive; news production; and radio broadcasting.

When it formally opens in May 2012, all of the country’s national TV and radio stations, the National Media Archive as well as other prominent, international broadcasters will operate from the new, 24-story state-of-the-art facility which features several multi-camera studios, auditoriums and event venues, office space as well as several indoor and outdoor multimedia presentation screens.

“Astana will be one of the most advanced production facilities in the region offering content producers the most relevant and sophisticated studios and tools for creating high quality content for national and syndicated distribution”, says Stephane Schlayen, Chief Operating Officer, Dalet SA. “We’re very pleased that Kazakhstan’s government and our integrator Akfa Teknoloji have incorporated Dalet technologies as part of the country’s ground-breaking expansion in media production.”

While Dalet Enterprise Edition provides the MAM backbone across systems, AMC will also rely on Dalet’s specialized toolsets to streamline many tasks associated with each unique workflow in the facility. For example in program prep, the toolsets facilitate ingest, content enrichment, language subtitling, version management, quality control, compliance, approval processes and promo production. In addition AMC will use Dalet’s dedicated toolsets for end-to-end news production as well as multichannel television and radio operations. The AMC Dalet systems are scaled to handle at least 450 simultaneous users across the production, news, radio and archiving units.

With its modern infrastructure and tools, the Astana Media Center will be a magnet for content producers and entertainment companies,” says Vladislav Bogusevich, Technical Director for AMC. “It was very important that we select a technologically advanced system that can address current and future needs while proving state-of-the-art tools for the creative community. With Dalet’s proven and global experience, including many successful installations throughout Russia, we felt very confident about using Dalet at AMC. It puts us in the top tier of production and broadcast facilities. It was equally important to have a robust MAM system to securely manage our country’s official media archive. Dalet has the power and flexibility to meet the very precise and specialized needs of archivists as we preserve our media heritage.”

Dalet Enterprise Edition facilitated multiple integrations with many different systems to ensure a seamless production and delivery chain for AMC. These include Netapp and Omneon Media Grid storage, Final Cut Pro editing systems, Vizrt ContentPilot graphics, Pharos automation, Evertz video routers, Rhozet Carbon transcoders, Omneon Spectrum video servers, QualStore tape library with Xendata archiving software, among others.

“This project is a tremendous undertaking, offering the most innovative systems for all types of video and multimedia content production in the region. With capacity for 20 TV channels, 50-video edit suites, 10 radio stations and 35 audio production suites, it was essential that we incorporate Dalet’s Media Asset Management system to effectively manage the high volume of content, different workflows, media and metatadata for content production and broadcasts at AMC, “says Fatih Aktas, Chairman of Akfa Teknoloji. “On the production side, Dalet’s integrated tools for TV, radio and news production are very easy to use and fully integrated for streamlined and efficient workflows from ingest through archiving and multiplatform distribution.”

Dalet, a leading developer of Media Asset Management (MAM) solutions, software and services for broadcasters and content producers announced today that Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) has deployed Dalet Radio Suite at its news center in St. Paul, Minnesota. The Dalet installation is the first phase in a revamping of the technical infrastructure, replacing a mix of outdated systems and equipment to provide MPR with a highly efficient news production and playout system for the network’s on-air operations as well as web production.

“The Dalet system has brought us significant workflow improvements,” says Doug Rowe, MPR’s Manager of Media Production Systems. “We’ve moved from a series of siloed production operations to a fully integrated workflow with desktop tools for all aspects of production. It fosters collaboration within the newsroom and between the broadcast side and web production; everyone can see what stories are in progress and available for distribution. From the technical perspective, we have a highly reliable playout system and consolidated infrastructure that is much easier to support and maintain. That will become even more important when we extend the system to include our classical music service and program syndication unit.“

“In today’s age of media convergence, Dalet Radio Suite offers tremendous flexibility for radio operators who can use Radio Suite to produce and deliver news and music content for broadcast and new media platforms,” says Julien Decaix, General Manager, Dalet Digital Media Systems USA. “We’re very pleased that MPR, one of the country’s largest and most respected public broadcasters, will be able to leverage the versatile, multimedia capabilities and the infinite scalability of Dalet Radio Suite to maximum potential in its news, syndication and music operations.”

With phase one complete, nearly a hundred MPR journalists are using Dalet Radio Suite to produce their news packages and newscasts, which are distributed to 34 public radio stations in the region. Dalet provides an end-to-end news production and playout workflow with desktop tools for incoming wires, script preparation, audio editing, rundown management and on air playout.

“We especially like the open, IT approach of the Dalet Radio Suite which gives us the flexibility to integrate our traffic, CMS and archives as well as to take advantage of new technologies,” says Rowe. “For instance, Dalet is fully integrated with our Axia Livewire audio over IP (AoIP) routing system. Dalet users send studio-grade audio directly to Axia AoIP networks via network interface cards, completely bypassing the need for PC soundcards. It’s a big win for us.“

The timeline for phase two of the project is now in the planning stages.

Dalet today announced that Radio Nacional de España (RNE) will implement Dalet Radio Suite HD to facilitate news and music program production for all six of their themed radio stations: Radio 1, Radio Clásica, Radio 3, Radio 4, Radio 5 and Radio Exterior de España. The RNE audience size ranks third in the world with a listener base of more than 80 million. The large-scale installation will consist of the Dalet enterprise Media Asset Management (MAM) platform with integrated audio production tools and music programming capabilities, as well as a robust newsroom computer system, facilitating all music programming and news production. Telefonica Servicios Audiovisuales (TSA), the leading systems integrator for Spain, will spearhead the installation, which will leverage the Dalet MAM framework to integrate disparate corporate systems and sub-systems.

“Both the team and technology from Dalet are very adept at unifying and streamlining large-scale, concurrent workflows like RNE,” said Stephane Schlayen, Chief Operating Officer, Dalet. “The Dalet value proposition goes far beyond this though. We design and deliver enterprise solutions that grow with our customer’s needs. Our modern MAM platform is engineered to support new technology opportunities, giving customers like RNE, a future-proof platform with a much lower cost of total ownership.”

The Dalet installation at RNE will cover 65 sites and include over 1600 systems equipped with a full range of production tools, including the new Dalet OneCut Editor, as well as the robust Dalet newsroom computer system (NRCS). Dalet’s MAM-platform will enable multi-site exchange between RNE locations. The core Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) will provide an API for integration with corporate systems, including RNE’s CRTVE (Radio Television Española Corporation) archive. The Dalet metadata management engine will generate and track metadata detail across the entire workflow.

“There are multiple integration points that need a dynamic and flexible system to accommodate the concurrent, bi-directional business processes. Dalet offers a proven platform with an SOA architecture that is ideal for supporting this type of sophisticated integration,” comments Jose Luis Garcia, Broadcast Sales Manager, TSA. “We have worked with Dalet on a number of advanced tapeless installations with great success. They have a mature yet forward-thinking solution that we can have confidence in handling a project of this size. Equally as important is the skill of their Professional Services team that will assist us in deployment.”
