Renowned news innovator Deborah Turness reveals how she is harnessing new tech, platforms and formats to bring Euronews into the heart of the story and how she turned NBC back into a number one ‘challenger brand’.

After a four-year stint in New York, bolstering NBC’s flagship news output, its former US president is one year into her next mission: transforming Euronews NBC into ‘a town square for Europe’.

Last June NBC took a 25% stake in the Lyon-based news channel, which led to Deborah Turness’ return from across the pond to become the first president of NBC News International and to oversee content for the new Euronews NBC.

According to the British journalist and self-confessed Francophile, NBC had been looking for the right vehicle to boost its international profile for some time and Euronews, which broadcasts in 12 languages to around 3.3m viewers, reaching more than 160 countries, fit the bill perfectly.

Dalet, a leading provider of solutions and services for broadcasters and content professionals, announced today that they have been shortlisted alongside Euronews for the IBC2018 Innovation Awards content creation category. Lauded as one of the most coveted awards in the media industry, the competitive competition celebrates technical and creative excellence, acknowledging collaboration between organizations like Euronews and Dalet to achieve clever and innovative solutions for real business challenges.

“We are honored to be nominated for the IBC2018 Innovation Award with our technology partner Dalet,” says Francois Schmitt, COO, Euronews. “With the help of Dalet and our other partners, we were able to achieve our vision and become the world’s first truly ‘Glocal’ news channels, providing our audiences important global headlines with perspectives and viewpoints relevant to their regions, cultures and communities. We thank the IBC Innovation Award judges for recognizing this incredible technical feat and Dalet for working alongside with us on this exciting journey.”

Euronews had been addressing the region’s need for multilingual programming by providing a single channel of news programming with identical video and English-only graphics delivered to countries with 12 different language versions. Groundbreaking when Euronews had originally launched in 1993, the “Multiplex” approach to broadcasting lacked the ability to adapt programming to the specific needs of individual countries, a limitation for today’s viewers who crave customized content. With multiculturalism as a core value, management sought to better connect global content with local audiences, transforming Euronews into a “Glocal” media brand.

“This project perfectly coincides with Dalet’s values of innovation, passion, and multiculturalism,” comments Johann Zemmour, general manager, EMEA & APAC at Dalet. “Collaborating with the same ideals and vision, we were able to leverage the advanced media asset management and orchestration capabilities of the Dalet Galaxy platform to construct one of the world’s most technically advanced newsrooms, empowering Euronews journalists to collaborate and turn any local or global topic into compelling news stories with perspectives and insights that resonate with their respective audiences.”

The legacy Euronews infrastructure had limited news to a “one-size-fits-all” with journalists relying on technicians to package non-localized news story with 11 voice-overs. The lack of system integration pushed news air times to an hour or more. To transform the operation, Euronews implemented Dalet’s component-based workflow powered by the Dalet Galaxy Media Asset Management and Orchestration platform, featuring federated editorial tools that empower the 500 journalists and a workflow engine that maximizes and automates complex, custom content delivery operations. The successful Euronews transformation, which saw no change in staff, increased television content production by 100%, feeding its newly launched 12 individual channels fresh content with a local perspective. It also increased Euronews digital content output by 20%, growing its online audiences by 66%.

“We are incredibly proud that the Euronews project has been shortlisted for an IBC Innovation Award and want to extend our appreciation to our technical partners on the project, PEAKS, who we collaborated with closely to bring the Euronews vision to life, and Adobe,” adds Zemmour. Technical project partner PEAKS provided a total redesign of the Euronews website and Dalet Galaxy integrated CMS to achieve a true 360° Newsroom that can produce up to 350 stories a day, reaching more than 13.5 million digital-users.

Unveiled at IBC2018, the new Dalet Media Cortex SaaS enables Dalet Galaxy five customers to connect and consume AI services on demand in a pay-as-you-go model. For media organizations to get full business value from their AI investment and operate at scale, they need the right method and the appropriate platform. Dalet Media Cortex makes it simple and effective. It connects and orchestrates smart combinations of cognitive services while managing all the complexity of data alignment. The AI-generated data is displayed at various levels of the Dalet Galaxy five application, in a set of new intuitive UIs, to provide contextual, actionable insights and recommendations to the users.

Dalet OnePlay – Modern Automated Studio Production

Dalet will also unveil Dalet OnePlay at IBC2018, a new-generation studio automation solution designed to modernize live production with synchronized multiplatform distribution. An extension of the Dalet Galaxy five platform, Dalet OnePlay fully leverages the MAM, NRCS and workflow orchestration capabilities to open up new forms of collaboration inside productions, automating more complex events, and eventually helping create new forms of audience engagement and revenue opportunities while optimizing costs. Dalet OnePlay benefits any sho production, making it an ideal solution for newscasts, sports magazines, live and live-to-tape studio shows. Dalet OnePlay’s modern and efficient UI and UX combined with the agile Dalet Galaxy five News Production and Workflow Orchestration platform enables custom live production workflows with more advanced collaboration and unrivaled operational flexibility, way beyond traditional automated production control solutions.

Cloud, Remote Editing and IMF Workflows

In addition to the new AI and studio automation product introductions, Dalet Galaxy five features several important enhancements that will be showcased at IBC. For hybrid on-premises and cloud deployments, the platform offers auto-scaling capabilities to balance infrastructure load and optimize costs. This new feature allows selected media processes to scale up and down automatically, according to a combination of process predictions, business rules and real-time demand.

Dalet will also showcase new remote editing capabilities that leverage the AWS infrastructure as a service resource. Dalet OneCut editors – such as journalists working in the field – can connect to the central bureau or facility to search and browse content, seamlessly mix it on their timeline with locally stored content (even in offline mode), and offload the rendering to the central site.

Elnecave adds, “The real advantage of leveraging AWS for remote editing is in the user experience. For editors connecting from the field or from another facility, the combination of S3 storage and Cloudfront gives a much more efficient workflow and a more fluid editing UX.”

A pioneer of component-based workflows, including IMF workflows industrialization, Dalet Galaxy five creates real business opportunities for global distribution. Key Dalet Galaxy five MAM and Orchestration functionality stores rich technical metadata, with workflow design tools, to automate IMF processes such as complex CPLs creation/rendering and supplemental IMF Packages management. Shown at IBC are new Dalet WebSpace tools for preview, review and approval of all objects of an IMF package, including the CPL, with a glance at the Video Timeline available on any web client, eliminating the need for mastering tools.

IBC2018 attendees can book a private demonstration or workflow consultation with a Dalet expert to learn more about Dalet Galaxy five, Dalet Media Cortex and Dalet OnePlay feature highlights here.

Dalet announced today that it has made sweeping updates to its Dalet Cube broadcast 3D graphics suite. Dalet Cube is a comprehensive suite of modules to design, manage and playout broadcast 3D animated graphics. Natively connected to the Dalet Galaxy Media Asset Management (MAM) & Orchestration platform and a core capability of the Dalet Unified News Operations solution, Dalet Cube offers a superior user experience and branding efficiencies for creating and managing CGs, crawls tickers, lower-thirds, logos, full-frame graphics and complex 3D animations across the entire news production and playout workflow.

“Dalet Cube has become the integrated graphics workflow of choice for premium news organizations such as Euronews, which recently launched 12 multi-lingual channels with Dalet Galaxy and Dalet Cube. The tight integration between the two offers an unprecedented user experience for journalists and producers. CGs can be updated at any point during the news production and playout workflow. For example, a journalist using Dalet OneCut can quickly choose a Dalet Cube CG template, add lower-thirds information, then dynamically preview the animated graphics placed on multiple CG tracks while editing,” comments Raul Alba, Senior Product Manager at Dalet. “Dalet Cube gives broadcasters a seamless approach to managing news graphics. It helps cut down on mistakes while keeping the brand intact, even during breaking news and fast turn-around stories. When time is of the essence, as it is for just about any newsroom, this type of workflow agility is a must-have.”

Dalet Cube offers a superior user experience and branding efficiencies

Unique Dalet Cube workflow capabilities include:

  • More Control, Better User Experience – With media, scripts, audio and graphics at your fingertips, it’s visually easier for journalists to manage every detail of the story narrative from one place.
  • Designed for Story Development – Dalet OneCut editors can position Dalet Cube graphics in the timeline/over video, preview the graphics overlay (including animations) and define behaviors. And because Dalet Cube graphics rendering is managed by a server, the local station performance is never affected.
  • Make Changes Anytime…Including Just Before Playout – Native connection between Dalet Cube and Dalet Galaxy means changes can be made on playback with advanced support to update behavior and conditions. With multiple CG tracks, users can add CG elements into the video project for either playout or burn-in. Graphics trigger automatically at playout wherever the journalists placed CGs on the timeline. With total control of graphics playout with the on-air video operator, one less person is required in the control room.
  • Search on Any Graphic Detail – Dalet Galaxy tracks every graphic object allowing graphics designers, journalists, producers and other staff connected to the Dalet Galaxy MAM platform to search on any and every graphic element – repurposing graphics and objects has never been so easy!
  • NEW – Multi-Lingual Synchronized Playout – For multi-lingual operations, operators can slot graphics placeholders in the rundown and Dalet will populate the placeholders with the relevant CGs in the correct language on playout.
  • NEW – Automate On-Air Graphics Playout Workflow – Advanced integration with Dalet Workflow Engine lets operators manage multiple variations of a single graphic element on playout, accommodating multi-studio playout scenarios requiring different languages and branding elements.

Other features and workflow enhancements with this Dalet Cube 5.2 release include improved ticker management, the ability to trigger CGs from Dalet Galaxy without having to follow the playlist order, enhanced Twitter support and insertion macros. With the Twitter integration, Dalet Cube can pull Twitter information instantly and put it inside Twitter Cube templates for broadcast.

Euronews, which has one of the largest Dalet Cube installations in the world, has leveraged the breadth and depth of the Dalet Unified News Operations workflow and Dalet Cube native connection with Dalet Galaxy to transform its operation.

Francois Schmitt, COO of Euronews, explains, “The big advantage was Dalet Cube and more importantly the way it worked with Dalet Galaxy. It was a big asset for Euronews. Not only did it support the multiple language channels, it did so in a way that allowed us to share the workflow and content across the 12 channels, giving us the flexibility to deliver more value to different territories by customizing content, without losing the Euronews DNA.”

IBC2017 will serve as the stage to unveil a new module of Dalet News Solutions, the Dalet Social Media Panel. Dalet has developed, within the Dalet Unified News Operations solution, a comprehensive social media framework that enables journalists to analyze, produce and deliver fast-paced news on social media platforms. The latest addition to this framework, the Dalet Social Media Panel, gives editorial teams a synthetic view of all their posts, including simple analytics to understand popularity of their posts in the blink of an eye, allowing journalists and news directors to better fine-tune and deliver content to targeted audiences, ultimately augmenting engagement.

“While the ability to publish to social media platforms is done by many broadcast systems, it’s often done as an ad hoc to the system and disconnected from the rest of the workflow. This is where the Dalet Social Media Panel approach separates itself from the rest of the pack,” comments Kevin Savina, Director of Product Strategy at Dalet. “The new Dalet Social Media Panel is a native module of the Dalet Galaxy Media Asset Management (MAM) and Orchestration platform, and is part of a wider social media framework. Not only are stories published as posts, but all data available on the social platforms is continuously extracted and used to enrich the story asset. It’s a true 360-degree workflow that puts social at the core of the news flow, which best serves a hyper-connected audience.”

Journalists, producers and assignment desk editors can access the Dalet Social Media Panel, right within their Dalet Galaxy workspace. Dynamic indicators such as number of views, likes and shares show how posted content is performing, while comments and threads allow journalists to detect new potential story angles. With data, tools and content at their fingertips, journalists can quickly evolve posts into deeper stories.

Savina adds, “The converged Dalet social media framework is designed to facilitate story curation and distribution to viewing platforms such as web and traditional broadcast while simultaneously outputting updates back to the social media networks. It’s a story-centric model that allows teams to deliver content that meets the consumption habits and expectations of all audiences, whether they are consuming complete news stories on social or simply using it as a method of finding news to be read in full online or watched live on-air.”

The look and feel of the Dalet Social Media Panel mimics the style of today’s social media platforms, making it a seamless transition for journalists to work with. To help manage volume and pace, Dalet Social Media Panel provides a central point for approving posts, as well as scheduling publish date and time. This keeps the social media news flow humming along smoothly. The analytical tools help both journalists and news directors view, at a glance, what stories are waning versus what topics are trending, aiding to make more informed decisions of what news stories and news angles need to be published next.

Other complementary modules of the Dalet social media framework include:

Twitter Harvester

Journalists within Dalet can create filters on the topics they follow, for example, #SolarEclipse2017; the system then automatically collects any new tweets that contain those hashtags or keywords and imports them as a wire. Any user interested can subscribe and get notified when a new tweet with that hashtag comes in, giving journalists the ability to feel the pulse of social media within their Dalet workspace as news develops.

Social media section built into the Dalet Story Editor

While writing a story for television or radio, users can easily curate their script for social media publishing, including drag and drop of images and video into the social media section. Throughout the development of a story, journalists can create new sections of their story to update tweets and posts.

Converged and easy editing for social

Within the Dalet OneCut multimedia editor, users can easily re-package television content to make it ready for social posts, including CG on the timeline with burn-in using Dalet Cube, integrated voiceover and open captions – an increasingly important feature on social with the demand for silent videos.

Simple and direct publishing

With the click of a button, journalists can post content straight to their personal or their news organization’s social media account. The system automatically publishes to YouTube, Facebook and/or Twitter, or queues it for later post synchronized with the on-air playout.

Fake news control

To prevent fake news from going out, all social media posts can be vetted, so only approved content is posted. Journalists can then view and track the activity of their posts, and notate which posts have been vetted and cleared for publishing, right from within their Dalet workspace.

Savina concludes, “Although the Dalet Social Media Panel is first being implemented within news organizations, Dalet clearly foresees it being used with other type of content and organizations – for instance, sports broadcasters and teams to publish highlights on social media, entertainment channels to push promos on social media, and more.”

Dalet, a leading provider of solutions and services for broadcasters and content professionals, will be unveiling several new technology advancements at the 2017 IBC Show (stand 8.B77), held at the Amsterdam RAI Centre from September 15th through 19th.

“Key for our customers is the ability to take advantage of emerging technologies that ultimately enable new business opportunities and growth. However, these come at a faster and faster pace. Replacement of key tools and infrastructure with every evolution is not a viable business option, nor is staying with the current siloed infrastructure,” comments Arnaud Elnecave, Vice President of Marketing at Dalet. “Today’s media operations require fluid, collaborative workflows based on an open technology framework such as the Dalet Galaxy platform, which can bend to the flow of new business requirements. All our recent implementations are about enabling this agile transformation for our customers.”

Elnecave elaborates on what attendees can expect to see on the stand: “We will be unveiling several key technology advancements at IBC. These innovations span across all media workflows, offering smarter services that enhance the content production experience, foster collaboration, reduce the complexity of multiplatform distribution and the curation of targeted content, ultimately enabling customers to create and deliver richer, better content to more platforms faster than ever before.”

Unified News Operations

An agile and scalable solution, Dalet Unified News Operations combines all the essential functions of an efficient modern newsroom, offering a comprehensive suite of collaborative tools that streamline the entire chain of operations. Dalet will introduce new additions to this toolset at the show:

  • Dalet Social Media Pane. As audiences consume their news more and more on social platforms, efficient production and publishing to these outlets have become paramount. The new Dalet Social Media Pane makes publishing on social channels easy and intuitive. It also provides a synthetic view of the published stories and their performance with audiences to inform new editorial directions and planning.
  • Dalet Content Discovery. This new module sets the framework for a new generation of editorial experience, recommending to the journalists and producers a selection of content readily available on the platform that matches their assignments or work in progress.
  • Advanced News Graphics Workflows. Dalet Cube, the comprehensive suite of high-quality broadcast graphics tools, boasts a new set of native integrations with the Dalet Galaxy platform for creating and managing CGs, crawlers, tickers, lower-thirds, logos, full-frame graphics and complex 3D animations. Available at various touch points of news production and playout workflow, these new integrations enable superior user experience and new branding efficiencies.

Orchestrating & Streamlining Enterprise Media Workflows

The new, award-winning Dalet Orchestration solution is an agile enterprise media management solution designed to integrate content pools and automate workflows across the various verticals of a typical media enterprise – such as programs, promos, news, sports and lifestyle. Dalet Orchestration provides a consolidated view of all media assets across the business with tools to easily automate and optimize workflows from acquisition and production, to distribution of content to multiple broadcast platforms and publishing systems. Delivered with Dalet Report Center, the solution offers critical business intelligence data specifically tailored for media operations, allowing management teams to measure performance throughout the chain and build data-driven strategies.

Deeper Integration with Adobe Premiere Pro CC

The critical connect point for post-production, the recently updated HTML5 Dalet Xtend panel connects Adobe® Premiere Pro® CC users to the Dalet Galaxy platform, providing a direct gateway to shared assets and facilitating greater collaboration with the rest of the users on the Dalet Galaxy platform – such as journalists, prep editors, sports producers and other production personnel. Editors can save projects or sequences as assets in Dalet Galaxy, and share them with other Adobe Premiere Pro editors connected to Dalet. New features and capabilities include support for multi-sequence export, locator inheritance, configurable metadata forms for exporting content and support for “while” scenarios when exporting from Adobe Premiere Pro.

Video-Over-IP and Virtualizing Your I/O Server

The Dalet Brio high-density I/O platform supports the latest IP standards adopted across the industry – SMPTE 2202-2, SMPTE 2202-6 and the soon-to-be-published SMPTE 2110. The latest version of Dalet Brio no longer has dependency on a physical video board, allowing for a full virtualization of the I/O service, opening doors to more agile, next-generation video network configurations.

Dalet, a leading provider of software-based solutions for media organizations, will be demonstrating its advanced media management and workflow solutions at the 2016 IBC Show (stand 8.B77), taking place this September at the RAIConvention Centre in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, from September 9 through 13. Attendees can book a private demonstration or workflow consultation with a Dalet expert to learn how enhancements to the Dalet Galaxy, Dalet Brio and AmberFin platforms can help them better create, manage and distribute content.

“Putting the right tools and technologies in front of users enables them to better respond to the changing content consumption habits of their respective audiences,” comments Ben Davenport, Director of Marketing at Dalet.“Dalet helps customers navigate and respond to these evolving behaviors by implementing future-proof media infrastructures and scalable workflows that support the content production and distribution demands of complex workflows such as News and Sports today, tomorrow and well into the future. Whilst at the same time, important standards like IMF and technologies such as cloud can be fully exploited by customers right now with Dalet Galaxy and AmberFin to simplify program prep and content exchange.”

Tools for Today’s News Workflows

Demonstrating effective solutions for today’s end-to-end news production and distribution workflows, Dalet offers embedded as well as federated tools to plan, collect, research, write, edit and distribute text, audio and video to television, radio, web and social media.

With content and production for all outlets converging and social media becoming the go-to platform for news consumption, content owners must find ways to streamline news production for multi-platform distribution. Enhancements to Dalet Galaxy user interfaces, such as an intuitive social media GUI that looks and acts more like a social media publishing platform, make publishing to social an easy and intuitive newsroom operation, allowing broadcasters to better respond to and manage new consumer habits.

Meeting radio broadcasters’ growing demand for cost-efficient, visual radio workflows, Dalet is showcasing integration with products like NewTek TriCaster and VidiGo multi-camera production systems. Driven by Dalet Galaxy, radio broadcasters can easily incorporate graphics such as lower-thirds and branding to enhance OTT distribution and maximize sponsorship opportunities, respectively, all while maintaining important graphics metadata that make radio assets more valuable.

Simplifying Program Preparation & Mastering

No longer do facilities have to manually create different versions of a program or movie for each individual market. With tools that take advantage of industry standards, Dalet is offering a far simpler process for global distribution of content, and the Dalet Workflow Engine, available both in Dalet Galaxy and Dalet AmberFin platforms, is reinventing the way customers can implement these types of workflows. Both platforms support IMF, an industry format that serves as a model to assist with and enhance program preparation and mastering. Visitors to the stand can see first-hand how the Dalet AmberFin media orchestration platform efficiently bundles media assets into an IMF, which can then be imported by Dalet Galaxy for effortless distribution. Dalet AmberFin can also generate metadata-rich IMF bundles authored with user-focused media-aware tools such as those found in Dalet Galaxy.

Dalet, a leading provider of software-based solutions for media organizations, through Dalet xN, today revealed the company’s long-term vision of the ever-evolving content supply chain.

“Dalet xN exploits both the technical and business benefits that cloud and virtualization make possible,” states Stephane Schlayen, Chief Operating Officer, Dalet. “While the concept of migrating a workflow or specific element of one’s workflow to the cloud or virtualized environment itself is not revolutionary, Dalet xN solutions go beyond this by extending and augmenting cloud and hybrid environments to provide a truly dynamic and flexible business infrastructure.”

Derived from L’extension Nuage (French for “the extended cloud”), Dalet xN leverages the breadth and depth of the three Dalet platforms, Dalet Galaxy, Dalet AmberFin and Dalet Brio, for media management, processing and acquisition, respectively, to provide business solutions, services and applications for all levels of the media workflow, allowing users to reimagine the media enterprise and new business opportunities. Dalet xN is based on three key concepts: agile infrastructure, next generation operations and new business horizons.

Agile Infrastructure

Through smart management of physical and virtual technology, Dalet xN solutions allow content owners, creators and distributors to easily respond to resource needs and dynamically scale workflows, or parts thereof, at will. Accessible administration and user tools deliver the ease of use that users have come to expect from virtualized and cloud-based services and solutions.

Next Generation Operations

Intuitive mobile apps and web-based user interfaces combined with robust automation and advanced metrics reporting gives users more information and more freedom to be creative at every level of the business, from artistic tasks to business direction.

“Dalet has an understanding of the enterprise and thus provides synergy across all Dalet xN solutions,” comments Kevin Savina, Director of Product Strategy at Dalet. “Whereas today many organizations offer a specific service or product that often puts limits on the type of workflow you can implement, Dalet offerings can be tightly integrated or loosely coupled to fit a user’s specific workflow needs. No longer do users need to be tied to their desk. With Dalet xN, they can be more mobile, more creative and more informed.”

New Business Horizons

With the ability to scale an enterprise workflow or components of it up and down at will, Dalet xN allows content owners to not only react to their changing environments, but to also innovate the many ways they interact with their suppliers, users or audience. By lowering the cost of the initial infrastructure investment required for new projects and project expansions, operators can explore new revenue streams and rethink the way they work in their own media supply chain, opening doors to new opportunities.

Savina explains, “You can provision for parts or all of your workflow tasks off-premise. What’s even more attractive is that you can turn it on or off as needed. This is ideal if you are increasing capacity for occasions such as covering elections or global sporting events where you need the additional infrastructure for a short period of time. It’s also ideal if you are launching a new media venture and want to minimize your investment while you test the waters. Dalet xN removes the overhead and provides the resources you need to grow, without the prohibitive upfront investment.”

Dalet, a leading provider of software-based solutions for media organizations, announced today the worldwide availability of Dalet AmberFin v11. Shown at IBC2015 (Dalet stand 8.B77), Dalet AmberFin v11 combined with the Dalet Workflow Engine, which leverages a Business Process Model & Notation (BPMN) 2.0-compliant workflow designer, greatly simplifies orchestration and automation of complex media workflows. New graphical and textual reporting capabilities give visibility into day-to-day operations, enabling users to quickly identify and correct inefficiencies and improve overall performance. In addition, Dalet AmberFin v11 brings native support for caption manipulations, UHD support on playback and more.

“Dalet AmberFin has always been the benchmark for video quality in transcoders, but with version 11 we have set a new standard in approachable workflow tools. The BPMN 2.0 standard, which is a highly intuitive way of designing workflow chains, is widely used across a number of industries and is very familiar to anyone with an IT background,” comments Ben Davenport, Director of Marketing at Dalet. “The combination of best possible picture quality, intuitive workflow orchestration, and the whole host of other enhancements available in this release genuinely puts Dalet AmberFin ahead of the pack.”

Benefit today from the latest enhancements in Dalet AmberFin v11:

Workflow Engine to Orchestrate Complex Processes

Simple drag-and-drop design tool lets administrators easily model and deploy workflows combining user and automated tasks and then monitor workflow instances in detail, with the status of each task being visually notated as media moves through the chain. Most importantly, operators do not need to worry about the complexities of a specific task; when the Dalet AmberFin platform receives a workflow trigger, it launches a process that describes the “recipe” – the ingredients and actions required to make the technical outputs. Users need only be concerned about the trigger and the result.

Native Support for Subtitle Processing

Caption and subtitle management usually leads to complex integrations with different technologies and/or plugins that are complex to deploy, maintain and monitor, resulting in a significant human or financial cost. With AmberFin Dark, the scalable and fault-tolerant transcoding tool from Dalet, workflows are streamlined as caption and subtitle extraction and insertion are supported natively within the platform. AmberFin Dark can now also extract Teletext subtitles to EBU STL files or MXF S436 standalone tracks.

DPX Support for Transcode-in

With support for DPX, the format preferred by Digital Intermediate post-production facilities and film labs worldwide, AmberFin Dark enables the packaging and delivery of every new creative material immediately and with the best quality.

UHD Support on Playback

As more and more content is produced in UHD, content owners and producers have an even bigger need for trusted QC tools to review the “ready-to-be-sent” UHD asset before its final delivery. AmberFin Play, which enables users to instantly review shared assets at any point in the workflow, allows operators to monitor all media properties through a single interface with high-quality, frame-accurate, baseband playback up to UHD with flexible audio monitoring.

Version 11 of Dalet AmberFin also includes a host of other enhancements including:

  • HEVC support for transcode-in
  • XAVC HD / 4K support for transcode-out
  • Extended ProRes transcode support to cover resolutions up to 4K
  • Multi-file import/transcode from Sony XDCAM/XDCAM EX, Panasonic P2 and Canon C300 camcorders
  • Support of MXF Op1a wrapper for JPEG-2000 codec on ingest

“This latest release of the AmberFin transcode platform really moves things forward for transcoding and media processing,” says Matthieu Fasani, Product Manager for Dalet AmberFin. “By clearly addressing industry trends, this solution is highly sustainable and likely to change the game for those of us in the business of transcode and workflow orchestration.”

Dalet, a leading provider of software-based solutions for media organizations, continues the evolution of its Dalet Galaxy media asset management platform, showcasing new technology and workflow advancements that give content owners greater control and visibility over the enterprise production and distribution ecosystem. The new capabilities, which include work order tracking, media packaging, native subtitling support, tighter social media integration and enhanced collaboration tools, can be seen at IBC2015 on Dalet stand 8.B77.

Following (Work) Orders

A quantum leap in workflow efficiency, Dalet is demonstrating its new “Work Order” feature for the first time. Providing unprecedented visibility, the new capability lets users review the status of complex ongoing work orders within the Dalet MAM.

“A work order contains the DNA of a project and, until now, was typically isolated within a third-party system,” explains Ben Davenport, Director of Marketing at Dalet. “By bringing the work order into Dalet Galaxy MAM, we can now see the progress of any given project. For example, a complex work order, such as creating an entire episodic series and versioning it for international distribution, adding subtitles and dubbing…could take several months to complete. As a supervisor, I may want to get an update on the progress of the project midway through. Because the Dalet Workflow Engine is configured to execute the production and distribution deliverables associated with the work order, it updates the original work order with a time-stamped status for each step, giving the supervisor immediate access to real-time reporting data that serves both technical and business needs.”

In addition, the Dalet Galaxy MAM will be able to store the history of work orders, allowing users to easily search and summarize historical reports.

Perfect Packaging

The new Dalet Media Packages feature further simplifies the ability to manage complex assets across the enterprise. At a glance, Dalet users can see all of the elements associated with a complex asset, including the relationships between assets, visually mapped out.

Davenport comments, “The Dalet Media Package feature shows you in a very clean and elegant way what media and non-media elements belong within the complex asset. For example, if it is an entire season, the Dalet Media Package feature will visually map out all of the episodes, promos, teasers, dubbed versions, packaging, etc. that are associated with the season. If it’s a VOD Cable Labs package, the Dalet Media Package feature will visually map out the VOD content package, including the associated trailers, posters, trick file, etc. It’s a powerful tool for quickly analyzing and qualifying that you have all of the necessary elements to complete your project and package it the way the client is expecting it.”

Wrangling Subtitles

Dalet comes to IBC2015 with a standards-based strategy that manages complex captioning workflows across all three of its platforms – Dalet Galaxy, Dalet Brio and Dalet AmberFin. With the ability to read and write standards-constrained TTML, caption and subtitle data are now searchable and editable inside the Dalet Galaxy MAM. Dalet AmberFin tools extract and insert subtitle and caption data to and from standard subtitle and caption transport including TTML, making the data available in Galaxy, while Dalet Brio is able to capture caption- and subtitle-containing ancillary data packets to disk and play them back completing the end-to-end caption and sub-title workflow management.

Better Social Connections and Ways to Chat

Ensuring content owners can reach their audience in the most effective way, Dalet Galaxy now publishes directly to social media outlets, such as Facebook and Twitter. A must in today’s connected world, the ability to distribute content to multiple platforms via one program gives content owners the power to magnify efforts without increasing resources, simultaneously broadcasting content on-air and via second-screen services.

Adding to the MAM’s social capabilities, the newly redesigned chat and messaging module provides Dalet Galaxy, Dalet WebSpace and the Dalet On-the-Go mobile application with a unified, modern chat interface with support for persistent chats, group chats, messaging offline users and much more.

Dalet, a leading provider of software-based solutions for media organizations, will showcase new media management offerings and workflow advancements at this year’s IBC show, held in Amsterdam at the RAI Convention Center from September 11th through September 15th on stand 8.b77.

IBC show attendees can book a private demonstration or workflow consultation with a Dalet expert to learn how enhancements to the Dalet Galaxy, Brio and AmberFin platforms can help them better manage and distribute content here.

Thriving in the Ever-Changing Multiplatform World

Designing, automating and monitoring transcode workflows, critical for multiplatform distribution, is now easier with the combination of Dalet AmberFin transcoder and Dalet Workflow Engine. Leveraging the Business Process Model & Notation (BPMN) 2.0-compliant workflow designer, users are able to quickly and easily create complex workflow chains with little or no prior experience. Deployed workflows can be monitored at any level of detail with graphical and textual reporting of workflow instances.

Ensuring content owners can reach their audience in the most efficient way, Dalet Galaxy now publishes directly to social media outlets such as Facebook and Twitter. Enhancing the production route to distribution, the new Dalet “Work Order” capability provides the visibility both operators and managers need. Work Orders are imported from a third-party system as an object into the Dalet Galaxy Media Asset Management platform (MAM); thanks to Dalet Galaxy Work Order updates, users can then view the progress at any point during the project by opening the associated Work Order object. The new Dalet Media Packages feature further simplifies the ability to manage complex assets across the enterprise. At a glance, Dalet users can see all of the elements associated with a specific complex asset, in preparation for multi-platform delivery for example, including the relationships between assets, visually mapped out.

Raising the Bar on Collaborative Workflows

Topping the list of new collaborative offerings shown at IBC is deeper integration between Adobe Premiere Pro and the Dalet Brio and Dalet Galaxy platforms. Via the Adobe Panel, Dalet Brio operators can start, stop, monitor, quality check and ingest directly from the Adobe Premiere Pro interface.

The newly redesigned chat and messaging module provides Dalet Galaxy, Dalet WebSpace and the Dalet On-the-Go mobile application a unified, modern chat interface with support for persistent chats, group chats, messaging offline users and much more.

In Step with the Latest Formats and Hardware

The consolidation of business in the broadcast industry has left a gap in the skills required to handle complex file-based caption and subtitle workflows. Dalet is filling that gap with a standards-based cross-platform strategy for the handling of captioning workflow across its three platforms – Dalet Galaxy, Dalet Brio and Dalet AmberFin. With the ability to read and write standards-constrained TTML, caption and subtitle data is searchable and editable inside the Dalet Galaxy MAM. Dalet AmberFin extracts and inserts subtitle and caption data to and from standard subtitle and caption transport, while Dalet Brio is able to capture caption- and subtitle-containing ancillary data packets to disk and play them back.

Extending existing UHD capabilities, Dalet AmberFin now supports high-quality up- and down-conversion to and from UHD to HD/SD in the scalable and fault-tolerant transcoder for a range of formats, as well as playback to the desktop or 4k monitoring. Dalet Brio brings UHD into the fold with support for ingest and playback via its client applications Media Navigator, Remote Recorder/Player and Multicamera Manager.

Support for Matrox XMIO3 and LE4 hardware keep Dalet Brio systems in step with the latest technology releases, while support for the new HP servers DL380 G9 and Windows Server 2012 R12 expand options for migrating forward.

Dalet addresses the urgency for high-performance temporal conversion head on with a suite of advanced software technologies included within the Dalet AmberFin platform, to be launched at IBC2014.

AmberFin Advanced Adaptive Temporal Transform Toolbox (AT)3 provides a unique collection of tools to suit all types of temporal transforms. Joining the already released AmberFin ACC is a new GPU-accelerated motion-compensated frame rate conversion tool: Cinnafilm’s award-winning Tachyon.

Attendees can see the first glimpse of this advanced software technology on Dalet’s IBC stand (8.B77) and learn about Dalet’s plans to further extend (AT)3 ahead of industry developments.

“Transcodes are central to all file-based processes in the creation of domestic, web and international versions. Different temporal transforms are required for each version type. (AT)3 provides the toolkit to address these applications,” says Matthieu Fasani, Dalet AmberFin Product Manager. “For example, filmic material that has been mastered at 30i requires ACC (Advanced Cadence Correction) technology to transform it for optimum domestic and web delivery. Whereas international versioning, for example taking European content at 25i and converting it to 29i for US broadcast, requires high-quality motion-compensated conversion. (AT)3 provides the set of tools that allows media facilities to choose the tool that is best suited for a particular piece of media and conversion.”

Directly addressing this issue, Dalet has combined the world-class expertise of AmberFin and Cinnafilm in frame rate conversion, scaling and deinterlacing to create an automated, reliable industrial transcoding platform that works at the highest performance for domestic, international and internet delivery.

Fasani adds, “Given that broadcasters now source and distribute on a global basis and have to deal with content at many different frame rates, fast, high-quality frame rate conversion is central to many file-based workflows. With the introduction of more and higher frame rates, this is likely to be increasingly critical for many customers in the future. Dalet customers can look forward to new tools being added to (AT)3 in the near future.”

Dalet AmberFin will launch its implementation of the GPU-accelerated frame rate conversion technology, in partnership with Cinnafilm, at IBC, delivering fast, high-quality, motion-compensated frame rate conversion. The combination also yields a four-times reduction in the amount of hardware broadcasters need to purchase, install and maintain, and includes a fully featured transcoding and format conversion toolset.

“The increasing demand for file-based standards conversion for international program exchange is a cost of doing business for broadcasters. By bringing together the quality and ease of use of the Dalet AmberFin transcoding platform with the precision and speed of Cinnafilm’s Tachyon technology, we can positively transform the cost of operations,” says Lance Maurer, Cinnafilm CEO. “Tachyon was created from the ground up for file-based workflows and leverages the incredible power of GPUs to provide unparalleled performance. I am thrilled about what this partnership represents, and we are excited to bring this solution to the market.”

Launched in April as the first tool in (AT)3, AmberFin ACC is a fast, CPU-based technology for correcting mixed or broken cadence material.

Alongside Tachyon’s stunning GPU-accelerated standards conversion at IBC, the Dalet AmberFin platform will be shown with the latest updates, including integration with Dalet Galaxy, state-of-the-art US film-to-television conversion, and seamless workflows for application specifications such as the UK’s DPP.

At IBC2014, Dalet will affirm its leadership in media asset management with new products that combine comprehensive workflow tools with state-of-the art image processing, transcoding and distribution.

Attendees to IBC (Amsterdam, September 12-16) are invited to witness Dalet building on the sophistication of its three technology platforms – Dalet Galaxy, Dalet Brio and Dalet AmberFin – with products and applications showcasing innovation in SDI and MAM-driven workflows.

Each Dalet technology platform features a number of applications that can be configured to power a wide range of workflows. Dalet Galaxy, the MAM platform to address news, sports, program preparation, production and archive workflows. Dalet Brio, the flexible, high-performance ingest and broadcast server. Both platforms to be enriched and integrated with Dalet AmberFin intelligent transcoding and Quality Control (QC) tools.

The united strengths of the Dalet portfolio put the company in prime position to address the workflow and media management needs of news, sports, promo and program preparation, as well as production and archive, now and well into the future.

The Platform Power Of Dalet Brio and Dalet AmberFin

Dalet Brio, the flexible, high-density, high-performance video server, and Dalet AmberFin, the transcoding, media manipulation and QC platform, will both be showcased with significant enhancements. Improved hardware platforms, new modules and flexible configurations will enable broader and more complex applications than ever before.

Dalet will share more details about the Dalet AmberFin and Dalet Brio platform enhancements prior to the IBC2014 exhibition.

Rule Your Workflow With Dalet Galaxy

At the core of Dalet Galaxy is an enterprise-level MAM platform, powered by a robust Business Process Management (BPM) workflow engine that harmonizes multi-site content production and all aspects of the business chain.

Feature highlights of Dalet Galaxy at IBC2014 include new modules designed to help users assemble the different components of a finished program; improved integration capabilities; and tools for better collaboration.

Visual Data Models That Simplify Complex Workflows

Manage and navigate complex data models by relating essence files and program components such as audio and language tracks, subtitles, and other associated assets (promos, highlights, trailers, etc.) in the context of the destination distribution platform. By grouping and organizing these components together, these new tools enable more efficient and transparent workflows for approval, versioning and distribution.

Empowering Third-Party Integration

The SOA-compliant API2 provides a set of high-level services, ranging from asset, media, metadata and search to more advanced services such as notifications, configuration, access rights and more. API2 also comes bundled with an intelligent dashboard for monitoring API usage per service.

Enhanced Reporting

This feature fully exploits the KPIs and rich metadata captured by Dalet in the production process to inform operational and business decisions. This new reporting tool introduces a layer of visibility, making it easier than ever to measure how systems are behaving.

“Xtending” Adobe Premiere Pro

Key to bringing MAM capabilities to editors working with Adobe® Premiere® Pro, Dalet Xtend is a module that facilitates seamless exchange of metadata between the two systems. At IBC, Dalet will be unveiling a number of enhancements to this application, chief among them being proxy editing. Users can now work on native hi-res files or choose proxy media for optimized project management. Finished files are seamlessly reconnected to the hi-res media for rendering and output.

The Connected Newsroom

Dalet, along with Timeline Television and BT Sport have been shortlisted for the IBC2014 Innovation Awards in the Content Management category for the forward-thinking design of BT Sport’s new production centre located in what was the international broadcast centre at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, the home of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

“From a bigger list of submissions than ever, our judges have worked hard to whittle them down to just 10,” said Michael Lumley, Chair of the IBC2014 Innovation Awards judging panel. “What I love about this year’s shortlist is that in each category there is a surprise, perhaps because it is an often-unheralded part of the broadcast chain, or it is from a fascinating part of the world.”

Launched on the first of August last year, BT Sport broadcasts a range of live sports content including Barclays Premier League football and Aviva Premiership Rugby plus Serie A, Ligue 1, Brasileirão and Major League Soccer from overseas.

Jamie Hindhaugh, Chief Operating Officer of BT Sport said: “At the core of our new studios’ build is a spirit of collaboration that brings the best of industry – and sometimes competitors – working together toward a common aim: to make the BT Sport studios a world-class hub for the best ideas and talent.”

The new studios are a production hub for all the content created by BT Sport, including a range of original debate and information shows every day of the week, which come directly from the studios, demanding a facility capable of multiple live broadcasts at the same time.

“AmberFin sits at the centre of the BT Sport workflow, providing file ingest, re-versioning and delivery for BT’s new flagship sports channels. AmberFin’s API allows the flexibility to customize its monitoring, control and integration within the rest of the facility’s systems and AmberFin’s integrated DPP capabilities have helped BT Sport become the UK’s first fully DPP-compliant broadcast production hub,” commented Charlie Tear, Technical Director at Timeline Television.

The new production facility scores a number of firsts – not least that BT Sport has become the first UK broadcaster to adopt the Digital Production Partnership (DPP) file-based delivery specifications for all of its own internal productions and externally-delivered content. BT Sport led on the strategic direction of the project, while Timeline Television worked closely with Dalet – a supporter of the DPP initiative and developer of a sophisticated family of DPP-enabling products and systems.

“We’re really proud to have helped enable this first-of-a-kind facility”, said Bruce Devlin, Chief Media Scientist at Dalet. “AmberFin has always promoted open standards and the DPP delivery specification is the first, truly national standard of its kind. BT and Timeline TV have really embraced the concept of using that standard to improve interoperability and create great levels of efficiency and collaboration. Now that AmberFin is part of Dalet, that desire to support standards and improve efficiency is even stronger.”

Dalet, a leading provider of software-based solutions for media organizations, is showcasing, along with its new three-platform lineup – Dalet GalaxyDalet AmberFin and Dalet Brio – key partner integrations and workflows from Adobe, Filemobile, Cinnafilm and Opta.

Citizen Journalist Make Headlines

The Dalet-Filemobile integration brings user-generated content (UGC) into the heart of the news workflow. Newsrooms use Filemobile’s geo-specific mobile alerts to geographically coordinate citizen journalists to cover breaking events. Citizens capture and upload pictures or videos via the Filemobile app (iOS and Android) where newsroom staff uses the Filemobile Media Factory to review and organize UGC for potential news packages. The approved material is automatically transferred to the Dalet content catalogue and made immediately available for production along with the newsroom’s professionally gathered content.

Better Integration With Post

Dalet Xtend lets Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid and Final Cut editors search, preview and retrieve video assets, EDLs and shot lists stored on the Dalet MAM content catalogue. Editors can quickly access and work on content, and then save their sequences or even the entire projects back to the MAM.

Deeper Dalet-Adobe integration offers advanced functionality, such as “edit-while-record,” which is ideal for fast-paced news and sports workflows. Other key feature highlights include bi-directional metadata, genealogy tracking, and inheritance of rights. Adobe Premiere Pro projects can also be checked into the Dalet MAM and then checked out by other editing applications, enhancing collaboration across mixed editing environments.

In addition to MAM integration, Dalet’s OneCut multimedia editor seamlessly exchanges content, associated metadata and markers with Adobe, Avid and Final Cut Pro NLEs, maintaining workflow continuity among production tools.

Setting the Standard for Temporal Conversion

Recently announced, Dalet has combined the world-class expertise of AmberFin and Cinnafilm in frame rate conversion, scaling and de-interlacing to create an automated, reliable industrial transcoding platform that works at the highest performance for domestic, international and internet delivery.

The GPU-accelerated frame rate conversion technology, in partnership with Cinnafilm, delivers fast, high-quality, motion-compensated frame rate conversion. The combination also yields a four-times reduction in the amount of hardware broadcasters need to purchase, install and maintain, and includes a fully featured transcoding and format conversion toolset.

High-Performance Sports Integrations

A major player in the sports market, Dalet MAM features enhanced integrations with Avid®, EVS and Quantel to provide maximum interoperability across the sports workflow. It also offers support for SportsML, Opta and SMT LWS, ensuring compatibility with industry-standard protocols and data services.

Dalet MAM Goes Anywhere

Providing a similar user experience as Dalet Xtend, the Dalet MAM platform integrates with Adobe Anywhere, a collaborative workflow platform that lets users of Adobe professional video solutions such as Adobe Premiere Pro CC and Adobe Prelude® CC work together using centralized media and assets across standard networks. The new integration makes it easier to manage shared assets and associated metadata, rights, genealogy and business rules for distribution and archiving locally and remotely.

IBC attendees can see these and other new Dalet technology offerings presented in the Dalet Theater and in the Dalet Tech Zone on stand 8.B77.
